Almost Salinas is an independent film written and directed by Terry Green. Its unimpressive numbers from the opening weekend were no big surprise; I don’t recall very many indie flicks hitting it big in recent years. I’ll make this quick because I’m tired after seeing the 7:50 show tonight. Basically, I thought the film was interesting, but it won’t make the big box office numbers to stay in theaters for very long.
The pace was far too slow for the majority of the movie. Interjecting the movie were flashback/dream sequences of James Dean’s Porsche racing through the hills of California. The print on these sequences is different. Terry Green explained to a few students at PHS on Monday that the printing was done by cutting every third frame and repeating the second frame in its place. It gave a sort of tripped out image.
Anyways, the pace was too slow, and the plot was very predictable. It was so predictable, in fact, that sometimes I felt like I was only waiting to see if my prediction was right, and not so interested in actually what was going on in the film. For a start to Terry Green’s Strata Productions, it wasn’t bad. Here is a story at The Daily Northwestern’s online edition, and here is Strata Production’s website. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves.
