Gotta love the Bush

I just thought this was funny. I saw this as Erin’s away message:
“You teach a child to read and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test.”
–February 21, 2001 - President Bush at Townsend Elementary School, touting his education reform plans.
I can’t for sure say it’s 100% accurate, but it’s damned funny nonetheless.

A beautiful bit

In this post over at Ars Technica, Ken Fisher brings up a couple good points about Miss Digital World, a new virtual beauty contest. The contest calls for the creation of virtual female models depicting ideals of beauty in 3D graphics. Among the rules, however, is an ethical and moral bit, according to CNN.com:
“They should not have taken part — not even as extras or cameos — in pornographic films, shows or plays nor have made statements…in any way out of tune with the moral spirit of the competition,” organizers said.

Funny captions

At Very Important Things, a blog by With Gusto, there are a whole bunch of retro comics with new captions. This is some good stuff, and it’s not unlike the cover of the Yesmen’s first CD, Total Comfort. Thanks goes to Chris, Jason, and Carrie for the link.

A Few Changes

OK, so obviously the site has a different home page. I figured that since I wasn’t doing the best job of updating my home page often, I would make the blog the home page, adjusting links and other settings for such a change. I think I’ve got most of the stuff working, if not all of it. I was prompted to do this during some time I locked myself in the office to clean a little. I even changed the Amazon.com links to point to things related to the current page’s contents. If you need to buy anything from Amazon.com, please do me a favor and click on one of my links to get to their website, even if you’re not buying anything directly linked here. Let me know what you think of the changes.

Power Outage

For those of you who could not get to the server earlier today, that was due to a short power outage. I do not know exactly how long it was, but my power was restored some time before 7:45pm. Unfortunately, I have my computer set to not turn on automatically when power is restored to it, so the server had to wait until I got home to be brought back up. It’s up now, hopefully for a long while.

D’oh!

So, I’m sitting at my desk typing something, and Adam decided to monkey around with the LRS pager coasters on my desk. He finds out the voltage and amperage needed to power the devices, and goes searching for an AC adapter with the proper stuff. Meanwhile, I’m still typing. All of a sudden, the power to my desktop goes off. My seventeen days of uptime on my desktop are over, and Adam’s crawling around on the floor unplugging things underneath my desk, tugging at the power strip. Blasted Adam disconnected my array of extension cords and power strips, killing the power to everything on the left half of our four desks in the Tech Area. The good news is, Adam figured out how to recharge the coasters, and we can continue the buzzing and blinking lights forever.
