So, I went in to work today at my normal 7:30 “early” Friday morning time. I was actually a bit early, but that doesn’t matter. We went out to breakfast at Walker Brothers in Arlington Heights, where I had a two by four breakfast (that’s two eggs and four pancakes), with a side of bacon and a side of white toasts.
After that filling breakfast — of which I ate everything, leaving just a little bit of yolk as a sign that there was, in fact, food on my plate when I started - I also left a little yolk on my tie
— we headed back to the school to do our last minute checks on the setup. Everything seemed to work, except that we needed to shift positions one last time, which put me between Adam and Sue, instead of between Adam and the hand scorers. We also needed to get some power supplies for our laptops, but that was no biggie.
The meet started out like it did last year - warmups, parade of competitors, national anthem, and the first competitors doing their thing. Things were going pretty well until I had a few coding snafus and a relatively short network outage. Once I got back onto the network, I was able to fix my code so that it displayed the gymnasts’ scores. Once again, the IHSA has linked the PHS site for scores during the meet.
After the first round of prelims, I realized that my code didn’t accurately take into account the place of the competitors, since not all of the competitors were competing as individuals, but instead as members of a school’s team. So, I will have to take this into consideration for next year, when I make the site database-driven, instead of just scripted in JavaScript. I’m going to need to make it record which gymnasts are competing individually, which are competing as a team, and which are competing in the all around competition (there are some gymnasts competing in all four events, but not the all around, probably because of competing as a team, rather than an individual - I’ll have to check with someone to be sure). Whatever happens, I’m slowly getting to the point where I can have a completely web-based scoring program that can be easy to use by anyone (of course, I’m going to have to learn how to allow secure updating of the database from the web, but I’m almost there anyways).
The remainder of the night went on with little trouble, except for the following: our radios were acting up with someone on VOX instead of PTT, my radio was interfering with the television monitor nearest to me when I talked, that same monitor failed in the middle of the second session because of some wiring problem that miraculously fixed itself, my photo galleries were being a pain enough that they will have to wait to be posted Saturday, and the second session draw was taking long enough to prevent my posting tomorrow’s order of competitors for any event (I wasn’t going to do it until I had all four events).
Now I’m finally home, and my stomach hurts. I think I’m going to have some ice cream.
