Last night Grant and Chris (the other Chris) came over. We had some Lou Malnati’s and talked a little, then Chris (my Chris) looked through Grant’s many photos that he took while he was in Europe. I was busy grading again, so I did not have a chance to look at quite as many as Chris did.
Grant and Chris both left sometime during the night, and so Chris (my Chris) fell asleep on the couch in the living room. I continued to grade, entering the latest grades into MicroGrade. Upon finishing that, I headed to my office to put my stuff away.
As I step into my office, which was dark because the light switch still does not work very well, I hear a sloshing sound and feel cold water seep into my socks. That’s when I realized that the rain had somehow found itself seeping into my office! I looked around for a flashlight, and when I turned it on to investigate the extent of the flood, I discovered that the water was about a quarter to a half inch deep, and that it was slowly immersing the surge protector for my desktop!
Not thinking about getting electrocuted myself while standing in the water with 120 volts AC being immersed just a few feet away, I went to shut down my computer so that I could unplug the surge protector. Somehow I managed to do so without getting killed.
Then came the process of finding what was in the boxes I had yet to unpack. What I found in them were my huge magazine collection, my physics and computer science text books, and other things that do not do water well. As I rush to remove things from my office, I step into another puddle in the family room. That’s when I woke up Chris because she had some photo albums (one of her prized posessions) and other things in boxes that were soon to become soggy.
Chris helped me move some stuff, and then we found the wet vac. I now know that we need a bigger wet vac. I’m still trying to get a hold of my mom to see if she knows how to deal with this or make the water stop. As I vacuum the water up, more just seeps out from the walls to take its place on the floor. As it is, I am taking an emergency day at work to clean up this ginormous mess. Wish me luck.
