Saved
by Mark on Jun.22, 2004, under general
So, a couple weeks ago I went and saw Saved, the new movie with Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Jena Malone, Eva Amurri, and Patrick Fugit. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Its satirical take on Christian fundamentalists was hilarious, especially with the experiences I’ve had with a few "very Christian" folk who have tried to push Jesus down my throat like bad cold medicine. I was quite pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie.
Did he just fart?
by Mark on Jun.15, 2004, under general
So, Bob and I were at the K-Mart in Palatine after test driving a ‘94 Ford Escort, when this old man walks by. At first, we didn’t care because it was just an old man in a red flannel shirt and some slacks. No big deal, right? Wrong. As we look at the car’s tires, we hear this "PFFFFZZZZT!" sound coming from somewhere around some trees by the apartments just across the way. When we look to see what was making the noises, we notice the old man still walking by and hear the noises once or twice more. Now, I think I saw his mouth moving, indicating he was making the noises with his mouth, but I’m not 100% sure. For all we know, the guy was farting from the other end. We’re not sure why he was making the noises, either, just that he was making them. It took a while for us to stop laughing.

Pick and drop
by Mark on Jun.11, 2004, under general
Researchers at Sony Interaction Laboratory have developed a cool technology dubbed "pick and drop," a play on the "drag and drop" method of copying information most computer users are now familiar with. The technology is showcased here. With a digital pen, a user can "pick up" data on a device, like a PDA, and "drop" it on another device, like a laptop or a dashboard. The data is copied from its source to its destination when dropped. Some of the uses given as examples are to transfer contact info between acquaintances, to share music between friends, and to share a file with the audience of a lecture (the file is dropped on a dashboard by the lecturer). All in all, very neato stuff.

The site is back up. I took it down for a while because of some work I am doing for a client. Let me know if something’s wrong or still not working right.
Worms suck
by Mark on Jun.01, 2004, under general
All I have to say is that internet worms suck. Most of my day was wasted today as we were hit with W32.Sasser.E pretty hard. We took down the school’s entire network, save a few machines, around 11:15 this morning. We didn’t start bringing machines back up for at least two hours as we worked on a method of deploying a fix rapidly and reliably.
For whatever reason our Norton AntiVirus was not taking care of the worm every time it was detected, which left several machines infected, looking for more victims. We survived the major outbreaks several weeks ago, but all of a sudden we fell. There are a few things that should be learned from today’s experience, and I hope that the right people learn them.
