All I have to say is that internet worms suck. Most of my day was wasted today as we were hit with W32.Sasser.E pretty hard. We took down the school’s entire network, save a few machines, around 11:15 this morning. We didn’t start bringing machines back up for at least two hours as we worked on a method of deploying a fix rapidly and reliably.
For whatever reason our Norton AntiVirus was not taking care of the worm every time it was detected, which left several machines infected, looking for more victims. We survived the major outbreaks several weeks ago, but all of a sudden we fell. There are a few things that should be learned from today’s experience, and I hope that the right people learn them.
