Book Review: Lamb

So, after almost a year, I finally finished Christopher Moore’s Lamb last week. The book is a work of fiction that gives some explanation for the events in Jesus’s life between baptism and his 33rd year on earth, you know, the stuff not mentioned in the Bible used by most Christian religions. I’ll keep the review short, so read on below. I found the book to be rather entertaining, very funny, yet also sensible. There are many teachings in the Bible that are similar to the teachings of Buddhism, Islam, and other religions. Jesus’s journey is told by Levi who is called Biff, Christ’s childhood pal, as the full title of the book reveals. They journey into the Far East, learning many things. Among the things Jesus learns are kung fu and yoga. Overall the book was quite good, even with my general aversion to organized religion. Despite some of the anachronisms, I found Lamb to make more sense of Jesus’s teachings than most Bible verses recited to me by chatechists in CCD. I will warn you, if you choose to pickup the novel, you will find some crude language and adult themes in parts of the book. I don’t think it would be an enjoyable read for those who are easily offended or are Christian fundamentalists. But then again, what Christian fundamentalist or easily offended person would be reading my blog?
