An efficient cut

Nicole writes again asking:

How do you cut a round pound cake into 8 equal pieces with 3 straight cut (sic)?

Read on for the answer.

The answer is that you have to literally think out of the box. The first two cuts are simple: you cut the cake in half one way, and then cut it in half the other way. You are left with four quarters of the cake. The last cut is the tricky one. What you have to do is take your four pieces of pound cake and line them up, then make a single cut that runs through the center of all four pieces of cake:

Now, if only I had the pound cake and some chocolate fondue…
