Hallelujah! There is still hope for the South

A story at Ars titled Creationists lose round in textbook sticker fight shows that there is still hope for the proper education of our country’s future in states commonly associated with the religious right. I make no secret of my distaste for aggressive proselytizing, and I can tell you that if this were to happen in District 211 I would be one of the more vocal employees, as well as a member of the community, fighting the placement of stickers with such wording in our science textbooks.

While we teach Evolution in science, we also teach about various religions in social studies, from the main concepts of these religions to their stories of origin. I remember learning about Catholocism, Luther, Allah, and even Shinto in my history classes. I wouldn’t appreciate seeing a sticker in my history book warning me that the textbook contains materials about religion, and that the scientific community does not commonly accept these religions’ stories of origin as anything more than stories. The fact is that the concepts taught in school expose young minds to subject matter they might otherwise never encounter in their day to day lives.

Deduct a point from the close-minded camp.
