A hen and a half?!

This is one of the more bizarre questions I’ve been asked, but certainly not the most bizarre. Nicole (thanks for continuing to visit) asks:

if it takes a hen and a half a day and a half to lay and egg and a half; how long would it take for a fly with a pair of clogs on to climb out of a pot of jam?

I made a minor edit in order to make the question easier to read. My answer follows.

While it may strike some of my readers as odd that I have never heard this one before, someone else apparently has. According to the above Experts Exchange PAQ, the original question asked by Tom Robbins was:

If a hen and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how long would it take a one-legged monkey to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle?

Tom Robbins is not this guy, but is actually this guy. The Tom Robbins trivia aside, I would have to go with the answer given by paStiSSet on EE that there is no answer. I could also go with the answer posted by the PAQ’s author, gilbar, which was "how big was the ox?", or other non sequiturs.

For now that is what I will leave with you. I’m going to sleep :-)
