BBC’s Top Gear on Discovery

There are few shows about cars on American television that truly excite me. The Spike TV’s selection of car shows don’t really hold my attention or make me want to watch them every week. I mean yeah, if there’s nothing on television on the weekend, I might turn to Spike to watch the televised version of Car & Driver, but I don’t feel like I miss anything if I miss an episode or a dozen.

I’m watching Top Gear, a BBC automotive show, for the first time. The Discovery Channel now airs it in America. This episode captivated me in the opening teaser: they pit a Mitsubishi Evo VIII against a Lamborghini Murciélago! With a race on the tarmac of an airfield, the Evo almost literally ran circles around the Murciélago, with the Italian ride spinning out around a tight high speed corner. It was great to see these vehicles in action against each other. You’d never see a comparison like this on Spike. Gotta love those Brits :-)

The genius of Peter Fox

I’m laughing just thinking of trying this one:

Fox Trot 7-31-2005

Of course, I would be trying to get a PSP or PS3 instead of an X-Box, despite Hersch nagging me for the past two years about X-Box :-)

Update: Apparently I just need to get a bonus at work, get addicted to a single fun game, and bring Jacqui along to Target and I, too, can have a PSP :-)

Dan Band at House of Blues

The Dan Band played at the House of Blues on Friday night, and it was a pretty good show. About the only thing that detracted from it was that it was almost identical to the BRAVO SPECIAL … Dan Finnerty and The Dan Band: I Am Woman. About the only thing I could think of that was different besides the names of people from the audience and some of the set was one new song in the middle of their set that replaced the televised serenading of a woman from the audience.

When we first got into the main room, we got some drinks (@ $8 a drink!) and headed to the floor. There we quickly met Michelle, owner of VinceBaby.com, a Vince Vaughn fan site. You should go check out the site if you’re a Vince Vaughn fan. Then again, you probably already know about VinceBaby.com if you were a Vince fan. According to VinceBaby.com, Vince Vaughn may have been at the show. He is in Chicago filming a movie with Jennifer Aniston, so it’s a possibility.

Sen. Bill Frist backing stem cell research

While I don’t follow politics very closely, when a news item like this shows up I have to read it. The Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist announced he will support legislation to expand stem cell research. From the article:

Frist — a heart-lung transplant surgeon, a close Bush ally and a possible 2008 presidential candidate — said he would formally announce his decision and "outline my convictions as a physician, as a healer as well as a policymaker" in a Senate speech.

"This research is promising, embryonic stem cell research as well as adult stem cell research, … and now is the time to expand the president’s policies because it’s promising research but it must be done in a way that is ethically considerate," Frist told ABC’s "Good Morning America" program.

I respect the Senator for supporting something his party leader openly opposes. It is also easier to swallow his view on the topic since he shares my view. Stem cell research is a promising field, but I agree that the methods used to obtain stem cells should be left to embryos that would otherwise be destroyed.

Rather than simply destroying an embryo that is unwanted or unusable for implantation, it would seem to me that a more constructive use and ethical end for the embryo is in helping researchers find cures or treatments for diseases such as Parkinson’s and treatments for paralysis or loss of limbs. While stem cells can be gathered from other sources, such as umbilical cords and placentas, and private funding can be used on creating more lines of embryonic stem cells, I don’t see why we should limit ourselves to funding only existing embryonic stem cell lines if we can do more.

Patting myself on the back

I got a call from my doctor today. My cholesterol has dropped about 50 mg in the past three months! Although it is still a bit high, it is significantly closer to the normal range than it was before I started running and watching my diet. My triglyceride levels have also dropped to normal levels, thanks to cutting down on my bread and potato intake.

While I haven’t gone all Atkins (which is a stupid diet unless you have been specifically prescribed it by your doctor), I have stopped eating loaves of yummy carb goodness from places like Macaroni Grill, The Cheesecake Factory and Wildfire. The key has been to just keep my meals well-balanced. Who’d have thought that just keeping things balanced would make you not only feel better, but potentially extend your life, too? It’s been hard, but after seeing the results, I could see my self easily continuing this lifestyle and not minding (despite the griping I did before about living healthy and all).

The best part, I think, was that I have still eaten things I like. Last week I had Easy Cheese and Ritz crackers. This weekend I had Portillo’s beef sandwiches and lumpia. The first time I tried Richard Walker’s egg white omelets, I worried about the bland taste, but they’re pretty damn good. All I had to do was balance it out and accompany my diet with a little exercise (link in case you have no idea what exercise is).

Fun with widgets

So, I’ve wasted a good chunk of the evening playing with some of the Konfabulator widgets. Click on the image below to see just how much I’m still playing with it:

A geek's screen

Are there any widgets you don’t see here that you think are useful? I tried Combarss and MultiNewsReader for RSS feeds, but I don’t like either of them nearly as much as I do the built-in panel for the Desktop Sidebar. Likewise, I haven’t found a good iTunes helper widget, either. There are some widgets that have functions I like, but I’d like a widget that combines all of the parts I want: simple controls, ability to rate the currently playing track and display the artist and title, with optional album art. Again, let me know if you found something I haven’t.

Konfabulator is free

Slashdot is reporting that Yahoo! has purchased Konfabulator and is now offering it for free. Konfabulator 2.0+ is now freely available, and anyone who has purchased 2.0 or later will receive a refund.

Yes, that’s right, now all of us Windows users can enjoy in the widget goodness that inspired Apple’s dashboard without having to shell out premium dollars for a Mac with the latest MacOS on it. Granted, I would rather have a brand new PowerBook, but I don’t have $1500 sitting around to blow on one. I’m going to have to go the free route.
