Serenity marketing failure

Marketing people can sometimes "get it," but usually they don’t. This is a perfect case where they just don’t have a clue. Ron Gilbert retells how a marketing company tried to drum up some grassroots advertising campaign for Serenity, which incidentally, opened about 20 minutes ago in New York, and it will do the same here in Chicago in about 40 minutes. The marketing company sends out thousands of e-mails to bloggers, informing them about an exclusive opportunity to attend a screening for the cinematic Joss Whedon sci-fi/western phenomenon.

Being a marketing company making such an offer, of course there was a catch: in order to attend, a blogger had to flood their blog with canned marketing hype about the movie. Then, after attending the screening, continue to generate positive hype about it on your blog. Granted, a movie based on the phenomenon that was Firefly, done by Whedon himself, would be difficult to pan. Nevertheless, a blogger with any credibility can’t just assume that Whedon’s god-like storytelling abilities are always in full force, and he should give Serenity a fair review.

So, refusing to be a part of the cog in such a ridiculous machine, Gilbert skipped on the "offer" and just posted about his negative experience with the whole deal. And here I am recalling Gilbert’s disappointment at what could have been a great publicity wave for Serenity. I suppose that even this isn’t really bad press for the movie, so much as it is bad press for Grace Hill Media, the buffoons behind the marketing mishap.

The Chosen Collection

I had completely underestimated the cool factor for Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Chosen Collection. Not only did I not notice the HUGE price cut Amazon.com gave it ($129.99 from $199.99), but it includes all of the content from the individual seasons, plus a 40th DVD with a documentary featuring Joss Whedon.

TVshowsonDVD.com has a news post about the collectors box set. Their post includes the box art for the DVD. So, if you’re looking to buy this collection, help the site out and purchase it from one of our links.

Fun with sparklers

This link from the daily wtf has a crazy video of what you can do when you have far too much time and far too many sparklers on hand. I was originally going to post this back in August, but I’m just now getting to it.

Fall TV part 2

Well, a week has passed since I posted part 1 of this multi-part post. I spent the weekend in Champaign, and I did not once touch a computer from the time I left my house to the time I returned home. And last week I just didn’t get a chance to write up anything about the TV I did see.

Enough with the excuses for why this is coming about a week later than I had hoped. I’ll start with this: I have not yet seen this week’s episodes of How I Met Your Mother, My Name is Earl, Two and a Half Men or CSI: Miami. I did, however, watch The West Wing and Law & Order: SVU.

I don’t yet know what I think of the early developments of this year’s West Wing. On the one hand, I think that the show made it all too obvious who the next President will be in that universe, but on the other, perhaps that is the intent. I won’t spoil it for those of you who watch, but haven’t figured it out. Just watch the episode again and you’ll figure it out.

As former Chief of Staff, Leo has long been used to being in charge. As candidate for Vice President, he is not accustomed to being told what to do and how to do it, especially not by the White House. Faced with the upcoming election, Leo briefly forgets that Bartlet still has an administration to run, and he has to sieze opportunities when they come regardless of the potentially harmful impact it may have on his party’s candidate.

I find the change in dynamics between the current West Wing staff (Toby and CJ) and the former staff (Josh and Leo) an interesting development. Toby and CJ definitely show a bit of resentment towards Josh and Leo for having left the administration to go for something else. You can also see how Josh and Leo feel slightly betrayed by their former co-workers when they go for an educational reform bill that could eliminate Santos’ major platform for the election. To cap off the animosity felt between characters, Josh lets Donna have it when she comes in to interview for Santos’ Deputy Chief of Staff. Josh recites back Donna’s jabs and barbs at Santos during the primaries. The last time Donna is seen in the episode is when she storms out of Josh’s office without the job she thought she would effortlessly get.

SVU was also an interesting premiere. Tonight’s story centered around a mother-daughter con artist pair that successfully conned millions of dollars from unsuspecting men for two decades. Olivia is the first one conned in the episode, but not the first, nor the last, to be duped by this deceptive duo (good alliteration, eh?). Guest stars in the premiere include Mark McGrath, playing himself, and Linda Carter, playing the mother con.

April Troost, played by guest star Estella Warren, is a pregnant woman threatening to jump off of a hotel balcony because she claimed to have been the victim of rape. DNA tests positively identify a rich scientist as the father of the baby, but he has no recollection of sleeping with Troost. It turns out that Troost drugged her marks with Rohypnol and used an anal probe of sorts to cause electro-ejaculation. There was nothing funnier than Ice-T’s and Richard Belzer’s faces when the medical examiner told them how the con was being accomplished.

I think the greatest part is that tonight’s SVU is the first of a two-part crossover with Law & Order. I’m not quite sure how the stories will be tied together, because SVU ended tonight without a cliffhanger. It was an episode that could stand on its own. Rich had a good point when he mentioned that the worst parts of the other crossover episodes that appear in syndication is that you don’t always get the full story. This episode doesn’t leave you hanging, wondering what’s going to happen next, but yet it does at the same time.

So, yes, this post is NBC-heavy. Sorry, but that’s all I’ve had time to watch so far. I’ll get to watching the rest of the premieres we have on the DVR, as well as the second episodes. Until then, you’ll have to settle for this.

Fall TV part 1

As Seen on TV

It seems like there are a million new offerings this fall from the four major networks, and a million more from the cable networks. Unfortunately, new episodes of Firefly (buy the DVD set from Amazon.com) is still not on that list of premieres this month :-( The good news is that Serenity is out on September 30th.

Among the new shows that have aired this week, I am particularly fond of How I Met Your Mother on CBS. First off, it gets a couple of free points for having Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan. I found some of Neil’s roles in recent years to be entertaining, especially playing himself in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (Amazon). I should also really buy the Buffy: The Chosen Collection (that’s right - deluxe set coming in November) so that I can get my Willow, Spike or Anya fix as I please. For the time being, HIMYM will have to do.

The premise of the show is that Ted, played by Josh Radnor, is telling his kids the story of how he met their mother when he was just a 27-year-old architect in New York. He becomes obsessed with looking for the right woman after his best friend Marshall, played by Jason Segal, gets engaged to Lily, Alyson Hannigan’s character. Ted reminds me of Jonathan Silverman in The Single Guy, with the same pattern of speech and mannerisms (maybe it’s a New York thing). I really enjoyed the first episode. Like Chris said, I’m not sure if I enjoy it because it’s just funny, or if the show reminds us of the past four years of our lives. My favorite line of the pilot episode is when Neil Patrick Harris says, "This is so going in my blog!" That one made me giggle for a while :-) Here’s to hoping it doesn’t get cancelled, like Committed did last year.

The other new series that I am enjoying is My Name is Earl on NBC. Again, the inclusion of familiar talent like Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee and the hot Jaime Pressly is part of the draw. While it is a new series, characters like Ethan’s "big lug" and Jaime’s "trashy chick" are familiar enough that it’s not like jumping into a brand new show. I also like how Earl has a list of 200+ wrongs that he wants to make right by, leaving the possibility for more than ten 22-episode seasons.

Part two of this post on the new fall TV schedule will come in a few days, after I get a chance to see more of the new shows and season premieres of the old shows. I am anticipating a good premiere for The West Wing, despite all of the changes made throughout last season. I am also looking forward to the return of Alias, but that’s isn’t until September 29th. I probably won’t get into Lost or Nip Tuck until after I see the DVDs and catch up.

Last minute changes

I should be sleeping now. Grant and Scott left about an hour ago. Before I was going to bed, I came down to the office to check my e-mail. Of course, I didn’t stop at just that.

I listened to an old podcast of diggNation. While doing that, I decided to update my ad links. So, I visited Link Share, AdSense and Amazon.com to get updated links. So, if you’d like to help out the site, buy something through one of the ads. I find the Amazon.com ad to be the most useful, since I shop there regularly.

After updating my database, I also changed the search on the sidebar of the site. Instead of the built-in WordPress search, I’m now using Google. The downside to that is that a search on the site will also search Al’s, Grant’s and Jessi’s blogs. Not a bad thing, but it will return a few more hits on most searches than the WordPress search.

Also, we went to see Cats today at the Auditorium Theatre. While I’m not enthused about the musical, it is a technically impressive show. I was actually told today that Andrew Lloyd Webber said that Cats has not story. I’ve been trying to make that argument for some time now. Ironically enough, it fell mostly on deaf ears.

He-Man "What’s Up"

The internet never ceases to amaze me. There is an endless amount of treasure to be found on the internet, and this is just one of those shiny bits of goodness. The guys at SLACKCiRCUS put together a hilarious video of He-Man belting out the 4 Non-BlondesWhat’s Up?. And I have to agree with Whoomp that the IM conversation in the middle of the video is a nice bit of random humor.

Simple a marvelous bit of creativity. Thank you, del.icio.us/popular. You bring joy to me on a regular basis.

Update: also funny.
