iPod nano

Props to Herschell for the link to the iPod nano. That’s right, the iPod mini is no more. Apple released a tinier iPod that is thinner than a standard lead pencil and only 3.5" tall! It comes in a 2GB and 4GB model for $199 and $249, respectively.

I haven’t had time to hit the tech sites as much as I would have liked recently, so I don’t know what’s happened to the talk about the iPod video. I’ll try to remember to check that out later.

Update: Ars has a post with more details of the announcements, including the iPhone and iTunes 5.

Update 2: Please see Apple’s iPod support site for documentation about using your iPod. I have closed the comments for this post. You may post comments at this post instead.

hey wasup man how do u put pictures on the ipod nano

  2. 2 Mark

    tyler,

The first thing you need is a version of iTunes that supports photos and the nano. Your best bet is to grab the latest version at Apple’s website.

After you install iTunes you can connect your iPod nano to your computer. Windows and Mac should both recognize the iPod without any extra drivers. If iTunes is not open, open it. Your iPod should appear in the source list on the left of the window. If it does not, eject your iPod (Mac) or stop your iPod (Windows) and disconnect it from your computer. Wait a few seconds and reconnect the iPod with iTunes open.

When iTunes recognizes your iPod, you can edit iTunes preferences. At this point, I only know for sure what the Windows version of iTunes will do. Select the iPod tab. There should be a tab within the iPod tab that is labeled Photos. Select that tab.

In the Photos tab, you can select folders where iTunes should search for photos. You can also let iTunes automatically synchronize all of your photos or manually select which photos should get synchronized, just like how you can setup the music synchronization. Once you update your iPod, you should have photos on it.

ok thanks yet i still dont know something when i brought my nano that came with itunes is this compatible for photos/pictures and if not were can you download this new itunes and will it affect my old itunes and nano. also do u know if you can buy cases for them in stores in melbourne Australia and were if so

  4. 4 cherity

I really don’t understand how to put pictures onto the ipod, I am confused!

  5. 5 alex

what if there is no ipod tab? for the pictures?

  6. 6 Mark

I had a much longer comment that was more in depth, but I accidentally closed the wrong tab in Firefox :-(

If you do not have a photo tab in the iPod options dialog box, you either have an older version of iTunes that does not support photo synchronization, an older iPod that does not support photos, or you may not have your iPod connected to your computer.

So, make sure you are using a verison of iTunes that supports photos, with an iPod that supports photos, and your iPod is connected to your computer. Also, you may want to check about upgrading your iPod’s firmware. Perhaps you have a version of the firmware that is somehow broken.

  7. 7 Julio

hey Mark i did what you said, with the whole tab shit but i disconnect my ipod and than a cant find the pictures on my ipod. let me know if you know anything later.

  8. 8 Endrick

I dont get it, what if i dont want the whole folder of pictures

  9. 9 GAzaroo

If you dont want the whole folder, then I suggest you make a folder with only the photos you want to put on the ipod then select that folder to go on your ipod. Sound simple?

  10. 10 Jack

i found if u right click ur ipod and then click ipod options.. then click photos, and then choose the folder u wish to put on, if u dont want all the pics just make a subfolder with the pics u do want. glad to help :)

  11. 11 Brandon

What about doing it manually? Like opening it up as a Win. Explorer window and adding pictures. Do you know how to do that?

    Thanks

    Brandon
PS i wont be able to remember the link when i get back home, so can you also email me the response? thanks.

  12. 12 Drew

Yeah, can’t find the tab on my nano. I tried to update, but it said i had the most current version. Are they lying to us?

  13. 13 marissa

ok…my itunes doesnt have the photos tab even though i just got it and my ipod CAN hold photos. answer that one Mark…is there like some way i can upgrade my itunes without buying a new ipod?

  14. 14 Christina

Hi..um i just recieved an ipod nano for christmas…when i was putting songs on it i had stumbled across the photos tab in my ipod options. But i decided to load all my music first then come back to it later. However now the photos tab is not their anymore. Im sure my nano is compatible with photos because it says so right on it. Im really in it deep because i’ve tried reinstalling new versions of itunes and everything….What am i doing wrong?

  15. 15 Carla

hey ive just got an ipod for christmas, and i really cannot work out how i put photos on there ive worked out how to put songs on easily, can someone help me plz xx

  16. 16 Carla

sorry i just read what jack said, and ive managed to fineally get photos on it lol! so thank u very much jack! xXx

  17. 17 Samantha

hey umm.. where do u download the new version of that ipod nano thing so i can put pictures on my ipod.. i dont have that ipod tab thing!

  18. 18 Samantha

omg i just read jacks message thing and i get it! no affence mark but ur derections arnt very helpful! sorry!
thank you soooooo much jack! love u for it!

  19. 19 Mark

Wow! I never imagined this post would get so much activity. What Jack’s directions say above is pretty much what I outlined, just shorter. Instead of going into the iTunes options, and then onto the iPod options, Jack suggests going directly to the iPod options by right-clicking on the iPod in the Sources list and choosing iPod Options.

I believe all new iPods already come with a version of iTunes which supports photo synchronizing with photo-capable iPods. You can always ensure you have the latest version by going to Apple’s website. To get the latest version of iTunes, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes.

Christina, as far as your disappearing Photos tab goes, I have no idea why it would be there at one time and then not at another. If the tab does not appear the next time you sync your iPod, try re-installing iTunes or updating your iPod’s firmware. The iPod Updater is what you need to update your iPod’s firmware, and it should be available from the Apple website.

  20. 20 Andrew

ok, i can find everything ok its just that when i get the folders i want to take pix from and select them, i hit ok and it says “disk could not be read from or written to” how can i fix that?

  21. 21 Andrew

now its saying, “required folder cannot be found” even though i’ve put my pics in a seperate folder and selected that folder in the box in ipod preferences…

  22. 22 Erin

Hey av jst got an ipod for christmas i no how to put the photos onto the ipod bt when i try it comes up i done have the write to use my pictures …

  23. 23 Mark

Erin, what do you mean that you don’t have the right to use your pictures? That is, of course, assuming that that is what you meant to write.

  24. 24 Melissa

But how do u add photos on your ipod if your itunes doesn’t work?

  25. 25 Pauline

how can we delete some photos from the ipod if we dont like it?

  26. 26 Ryan

Mark, i got the pictures on my nano, but now im wondering if you can put them on the backround of your ipod screen?

  27. 27 britt

how do you take pictures off?

  28. 28 alexi

i need help my itunes thing does not have the photo thing

  29. 29 Mark

Andrew, the only thing I can think of regarding your “required folder cannot be found” and “disk could not be read from or written to” problems is some sort of file access problem. I would check to make sure that the right folder is indeed selected as your source for the “Synchronize photos from” setting, and then the approprate folder in your source folder(s) is (are) selected.

Melissa, as far as adding photos to your iPod if iTunes does not work, you can always add photos if your iPod shows up as an available drive in My Computer or on your Mac Desktop. The iPod can act like a hard drive, USB drive or other removable storage. However, if you simply copy photos to your iPod using drive access, you will not be able to view the photos on the iPod screen.

Pauline and britt, to delete photos from your iPod, just unselect the folders with the photos you do not want from the iPod options dialog box. The next time you synchronize your iPod, the unselected photos should be deleted. AFAIK there is no way to delete the photos individually.

Ryan, you cannot set your photos as the background for your iPod screen. However, you can setup music to play as the background to a slideshow of your photos on the iPod screen, or you can view the slideshow on a TV using the optional AV cable.

  30. 30 mike

does the ipod dock charge the ipod and hook up to itunes like the usb cable would do??

  31. 31 mike

    for a nano?

  32. 32 Emilie

How do I add photos to my iPod. It doesn’t tell you in on the site so I was hopeing you would know. Please tell me.

  33. 33 Pussycat Doll

Just wanted to say thanks! I got it on the first try!

  34. 34 Jake

guys and gals i dont see why your having so much trouble sum people cant find the tabs cuz their not reading it right …anyone who doesnt get what mark is saying email me on regards to this please email me at KoreZ07@aol.com

  35. 35 Mark

Mike, the iPod dock connects to your dock cable to provide a cradle into which you can set your iPod so that it stands up when you’re charging/synchronizing your iPod. I believe the new universal dock allows you to use it with any iPod with a dock connector (an adapter may be required to adjust for different sized iPods), as well as an IR receiver to use with the new iPod remote control.

  36. 36 laura

how do u get scratches off the screens !!!!!!!!!! i cants believe i av scratched it and i dont no what to do plz HELP!!

  37. 37 Stephen

Mark, you helped a little. but for goodness sake its not that hard to figure out how to add photos. you need to have photos on your computer downloaded from a camera. then in itunes right click on your ipod and select photos.

  38. 38 Mark

Stephen, I wholeheartedly agree that it’s not hard to put photos on an iPod. I’m not sure why it has been as diffficult as it has for some of the readers.

Laura, the afinity for scratches that the new iPods have is one of the biggest complaints about them. Unfortunately, I do not know what does and does not work to fill in the scratches. My suggestion would be to checkout the forums at iPodLounge and see if someone has a solution for you.

  39. 39 Jaclyn

    Thank u
    xxxx

  45. 45 Mark

Carla, you can try to reset your iPod by holding the Play and Pause buttons after toggling the Hold switch on and off. I found the directions for 3G iPods, but it should work for that version or newer iPods (i.e. click wheel, nano and video iPods). I think the newer iPods may require that you connect the iPod to the AC adapter, and not just to your computer.

  46. 46 Sarah

Yeah guys, Thank you so much for posting how to put video on, It was really simple. I love my ipod video. I read some above comments about Carla’s ipod breaking.> That happend to mine and we had to return it because it was doing the same things that you said were happening to yours. The people at the place said that the clicking was because of a fault hard drive. I would try returning it iif all else fails..
Oh yeah any sugestions on how to download/buy the software needed for video? thankyou
I dont go to this site much so msn me smurfie3397@bluefrog.com

    Thankyou :-)

  47. 47 Sarah

I just noticed I said “Thanks” a lot. And you guys didn’t even do anything yet.

    HAHA

Well Yeah. Other than that the comment still stands.

  48. 48 Mark

Jon and Jaclyn, what have you named your iPod? This post at a gadget blog is about the same problem. The post author was able to solve it by renaming his iPod. He chose the default name (IPOD), but the problem may be related to the name exceeding a maximum number of characters, or having a special character (like an apostrophe, an ampersand or a question mark) in the iPod’s name.

Try to rename your iPod and resynchronize with iTunes.

  49. 49 Jon

thanks for the info mark, i just thought id check this page again, i sorted the photos out finally the other day, what i did is went into ipod options and checked the box “disk in use” and it sorted my problem i hope this owrks for ppl with the smae problem i had :)

  50. 50 Carla

Hiya again, Thanks Sarah and Mark, i returned the other one that did that and got a new one but now it has done it again lol! and again ive tried everything and it wont work, i read marks instructions and i cant seen to find out how to reset it still??

  51. 51 Carla

ive been asking around and one of my mates knew how to work my ipod so its fixed!!! for anyone else’s ipod that happens to u just have to hold the circle button in the middle and the menu button untill its turns black and an apple sign comes up, after that it should work!

  52. 52 ann

Thanks Mark for the great info on adding photos to an ipod. Worked great.

  53. 53 elp

well i have tried to put pictures on my ipod nano but when i select from my pictures folder none of my actual pictures show up. i am really frustrated :( and i keep on trying but it doesnt work what do i do?

  54. 54 Josh

My problem is not photo-related. I got a new 4gb nano outside my home town, and to get some music on there my friend connected it with his computer and we added some pod-casts… now I have it home, and my nano has his name on it. I’ve checked all over iTunes and the nano’s menu’s, and can’t figure out how to rename it. Help please!

    Josh

  55. 55 Josh

I was able to solve it - did a restore to factory settings.

  56. 56 jimmy

  59. 59 jimmy

  61. 61 bobby o'shea

my ipod nan has the rewind sign in the top corner and i dont know how to get rid of it

  62. 62 Alex

Hey, um what i dont understand about my 2g nano is that i have around 179 songs on it but it says i only have 1000mb left but i dont understand that. All my songs are at least 3 minutes the most and i know that 1000mb is quite alot but my nano is suppose to hold 500 songs.

  63. 63 Mark

Alex, the number of songs that Apple claims an iPod can hold is determined by choosing an “average” file size per song and dividing the iPod’s storage capacity by that size. From apple.com:

1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less. Song capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; photo capacity is based on iPod nano-viewable photos transferred from iTunes.

Since your music is shorter in length than the 4 minutes per song that Apple used, you probably have music encoded at a higher bitrate than 128-Kbps or in a less efficient compression method than AAC. This would still make your shorter songs take up more space per song than Apple’s arbitrary average.

  64. 64 jade

i am so glad i found this website! i got my ipod nano for christmas and it wouldn’t let me put songs on to it. so i sent it back to apple and they sent me another one that works. only thing is it won’t allow me to put pictures on it. saying various things to the effect of “can’t find an unknown folder” or something of the like. it’s getting on my nerves! is there anything i can do to remedy this or should i just send it back again? also the battery runs out really quickly…like in a day or two is that normal? thanks! jade

  65. 65 Carla

hey again lol! how do i delete all the songs off my ipod?

  66. 66 Mark

Probably the easiest way to erase your iPod is to re-install the iPod Upater software. In Windows, you can also set your iPod to run in disk mode, then just erase the files from the iPod’s disk.

  67. 67 Jason

Hi i just got a nano but i dont know how to delete pictures

  68. 68 Ryan

i need help getting rid of the rewind sign in the left corner of my nano as well

  69. 69 DanMc

    umm,
just wondering if anyone has any comments on how to fix my ipod. I recenlty received an ipod 2gb nano for my birthday. My friend tells me to manually manage the songs in my ipod after i couldn’t ‘unlokc’ the screen and my songs. My new problem is trying to add playlists and extra songs into my ipod. After selecting manually adding songs, I tried dragging playlists into my ipod directory but the message: “The iPod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.” After i press ‘ok’ the playlist shows up in my iPod but only in itunes and not in my ipod. Any help?

  70. 70 lynn

how do u put radio channels onto ur ipod nano?

  71. 71 Mark

lynn, in order to get radio on your iPod nano, you’ll need to get the iPod Radio Remote. It works on the iPod nano and iPod with video.

If you’d like to listen to podcasts, which are pre-recorded, you can subscribe to a podcast from iTunes. iTunes Music Store also has a collection of podcasts to which you can subscribe.

  72. 72 Mark

DanMc, you may need to rename your iPod so that the name does not contain any spaces or other special characters. This is a problem most common on Windows, where an iPod is named with characters other than letters and numbers. Try to rename your iPod to ‘ipod’ or something else using only letters and numbers and see if you can update your iPod then.

  73. 73 britt

how in the world do you put contacts on your ipod nano?? i’ve read the features guide and everything but am still completely confused!

  74. 74 Mark

britt, on a Mac, putting contacts on your iPod only involves adding contacts to the built-in Address Book, then synchronizing your iPod. On a Windows computer, you have to export your contacts as vCards. This varies from application to application, so search your contact manager’s or address book’s help on doing that. Copy the vCards to the Contacts folder of the iPod. Your iPod must have disk use enabled so that you can do this. I hope that helps.

  75. 75 jessica

My iPod won’t turn off and I don’t know how to reset it and it isn’t pressing play and turning hold on and off. How do I get it to turn off?!?!

  76. 76 Ryan

all you have to do, hook up your ipod and itunes will pop up,( on comp of course) then in bottom right hand corner of itunes box there is a picture of an ipod, if you hover the mouse over it it will say display ipod options. click on it, then the photo tab and add the folder of pics you want in it

  77. 77 Ryan

adding on to /\ (above) check the box saying synchronize photos from and you can either choose my pictures or another folder

  78. 78 junior

how do i put my pictures asmy background

  79. 79 Ryan

you cant do that, beleive me i would if i could it pissed me off to, but it isnt near as big as a psp so i guess it would take allot of technology, it would also make your screen hard to read, sorry

  80. 80 Ricky

Hey I need to know how to delete everything off of my ipod nano. My mom bought it from a friend and I don’t have anything for the ipod on my computer or anything how do i get the files downloaded on my computer so i can put my own photos on my nano, songs, rename it?

  81. 81 Jill

Hi, do you you know how to delete pictures of the ipod nano and ya i tried unchecking the boxes but they still will not delete!!! thanks~

  82. 82 Ryan

on your itunes, go to the little ipod icon at the bottom (when your ipod is plugged in) and clickon it, go to the music tab in it, then it should say something about clear or you should be a ble to figure it out from there or you can restore your ipod i think its in the same box. i know its somewhere in itunes. hope this helps, let me know if it does email me at blndntnmn@yahoo.com, ty gl

  83. 83 sarah

hey mark i know how to put pictures and songs on but how do you put a picture next to a song while playing

  84. 84 Mark

Sorry I haven’t been answering comments on this post. I’ve been busy with a few things, and not having an iPod makes it a little harder to answer questions about iPods :-(

@jessica: Here is a reference for resetting your iPod. The post shows you how to reset any iPod. Unfortunately, it looks like they might have botched up their blog installation, so check it in a few days to see if it’s up. There is also some help at Apple.com. If all else fails, you can try Googling for hidden ipod commands.

@Ryan: Thanks for picking up some of the slack on the questions. I appreciate it.

@sarah: I believe only album art appears next to your track info when you play music on your iPod. To get album art, you have several options. If you have a picture you would like to add to the album art for a track, open up the track’s info in iTunes. Go to the Artwork tab. Click on Add… and browse to the picture you want to add to the track. If you get the info for multiple tracks at once, you can copy and paste a picture into the Artwork field and have it added to all of the selected tracks.

As always, let me know if you have any questions :-)

  85. 85 Mohammad

My Ipod Nano always displyas the rewind sign:

I also had the this problem. This is what I have done to resolve the problem:

step 1: I toggled the Hold switch on and off. This hold switch will be found on the upper left corner of your iPod Nano.

step2: I pressed and hold the menu and center of the iPod Nano together. After couple of seconds, I have seen the Apple sign.

step3.As soon as I have seen the apple sign , I have kept the Nnao for couple of seconds. And next thing I have noticed “No more rewind sign”

Hopefully it will work for you.

    xxx

  91. 91 John

Is there a specific format the pictures for the Ipod Nano, have to be. Like size and file type! Thanks!

  92. 92 Mark

Apple has a FAQ about synchronizing photos with iTunes.

@shiv: Your best bet may be to open up your iPod options in iTunes and change which photo folders get synchronized between your computer and your iPod. You may also want to tell iTunes that you only want thumbnails synchronized, especially if you’re not sharing photos from your iPod with other computers. This will significanly reduce the amount of space taken up by your photos.

@John: Apple lists the compatible photo formats on their support site. There is a list for the supported files for both Mac and Windows versions of iTunes.

  93. 93 Amy

hey mark. :) my dad bought me an ipod nano last night and i added all these songs to the library in itunes. i clicked on the sidebar where it said the name of my ipod (in my case - lilly) and clicked on file > update ‘lilly’ but it came up with an error message.

“the ipod “lilly” cannot be updated. the disk could not be read or written to.”

i’m not sure what to do. i added some songs before but i had no idea what i was doing. :P could you help me out, here please? :)

side note: some people said that if your ipod has a funky name like ~*PwInCe$$*~ it wouldn’t work, but i don’t really see anything wrong with Lilly.

  94. 94 Jordan

I got my ipod nano last week and connected it to the computer but all the pictures on my computer have automatically gone on my ipod nano and i dont know how to delete it

  95. 95 jon butler

thanks for the help in getting photo`s onto my nano, your help was the most precise and easy to follow i had found

  96. 96 Mark

@Amy: Yes, special characters like ‘$’, ‘!’, ‘~’ and ‘*’ in your iPod’s name may cause problems. Since your iPod’s name is “lilly,” I doubt that is the source of your problems. I would try to manually eject your iPod, then disconnect and reconnect it to your computer. If that does not allow you to update your iPod, you may need to perform a hard reset your iPod. I posted this link before, which has a nice Flash movie that shows you how to reset any iPod. Please post how you solved your problem when you solve it.

@Jordan: Try to set iTunes to not synchronize your photos with your iPod. This setting is under the iPod settings in Preferences. If that doesn’t work, enable disk use and try deleting the photos through Windows Explorer or the Finder.

@jon butler: I’m glad you were able to find the help that you needed from my site.

  97. 97 karen

Just wanted to thank Carla for her post in january on how to reset the ipod. Was really stumped till I found this.

  98. 98 jon butler

when using itunes how do you put songs into ,artists, genres, ratings

  99. 99 A. Young

Mark, can you delete songs off your iPod if you want to make room for more, and ur tired of that song??

  100. 100 Mark

Wow, this post has really hit it big. It’s my first post to reach 100 comments!

@karen: I am glad you found this post useful.

@jon butler: The easiest way to edit your song info is to right-click (Windows) or Option-click (OS X) on a track or series of tracks and select Get Info from the context-sensitive menu. Then you can edit the fields in the various tabs. You can also edit some of the information if it is viewable in your song listing. Just click on the field you wish to edit and the text becomes editable.

@A. Young: If you do not have your iPod automatically updated, you can manually remove songs from the iPod by selecting it from the source list, then clearing the songs you wish to remove. If your iPod is automatically updated, you can select which playlists are update from the iPod options dialog box. You can also tell iTunes to only update checked songs. Then uncheck songs you do not wish to get transferred to your iPod.

    I hope that helps.
