Switch part 1

OK, the site’s been down for about a day now. Last night, I decided to make the switch to Dreamhost. Surprisingly, the DNS changes did not take very long to propagate through the part of the internet I use. I think my other web space became unreachable through the domain name within two hours.

Late last night I finally figured out a little bit of their web panel and how it works. It is quite different from my last host in how it lets users administer their websites. That being said, only time will tell me whether it is any better or worse than cPanel. The way Dreamhost handles MySQL databases is quite a change from Geek Hosting. Dreamhost allows you to choose a server name for your MySQL server, as well as a database name and username. Unfortunately, it requires both a unique database name and a unique server name for each database. These must be unique throughout all of Dreamhost’s users. I took an idea from how Geek Hosting did my databases and prepended them with my site’s name and an underscore. I’m sure other hosts must do the same thing, but these are the only two hosts I’ve personally used.

As you can see, I’ve finally got my blog back up and running. For those of you whose blogs I am hosting, I still have to upload your folders and redirect the database information. Give me just a little bit longer. I anticipate that the other blogs hosted on ask-mark.com will return by Wednesday evening.
