Jessi brought Veronica Mars over yesterday, and we’ve already watched two episodes (we’re on the third episode now). I must say, it’s a pretty good show so far. I recall liking the concept when I first heard about the show. Of course, I don’t remember much about the show’s original airing. I didn’t even remember what station aired it (UPN, for those of you wondering).
The story is fairly dynamic, despite some of the flat acting. The premise of the story is that Veronica is a high school student whose father was the former sheriff. He lost his job as the sheriff after a media frenzy involving the murder of Veronica’s best friend. Veronica’s father suspected her friend’s father in the murder, but another person eventually confessed to the murder. Needless to say, it was not good for the sheriff’s office.
Veronica’s father started a private investigation firm after losing his job. Now, Veronica works as his assistant. On the side, she also does some of her own investigations, including trying to find her mom. She left Veronica and her dad after he lost his job and the prestige that came with it.
This summary is a lot better than the one I just deleted to make room for it. I was distracted by the fourth episode while writing it. The show is certainly no Firefly, but it is entertaining, nonetheless.
By the way, if this post seems odd (i.e. lack of links, lack of better vocabulary, and a general lack of qualty), it’s probably because I’m using a TabletPC to post it. I’m finding that there are some limitations to using the handwriting recognition to post. For example, inserting HTML is a bit difficult because all of the <> angle brackets are continually being recognized as parentheses! It’s rather annoying, to say the least. Also, I find it a whole lot easier to type out my thoughts rather than to handwrite them out. You just can’t beat a keyboard when you don’t write anything out anymore. The only upside to the Tablet’s handwriting recognition is that it can read some my writing better than I can
I had originally just said that "it can read my writing better than I can," but when I went back to read it, I found that it didn’t do quite as good of a job reading my writing as I thought it did.
Damn straight it ain’t no Firefly! But Joss hails it as, and I quote, “Best. Show. Ever.” That’s gotta say somethin’, right?
still worth the purchase tho? i’ve missed a few new media tuesdays but that was on my list..
I stunmbled across your blog and I have to say I’m obsessed with Veronica Mars. I’m surprised you think the acting is flat, I think everyone is fabulous! I hope you enjoy the rest of the season!
OK, I don’t know enough about the DVD set to tell you straight out whether it’s worth the cash. If the season lasts for a full 22 episodes, I wouldn’t mind paying $35 for it. I don’t know that I’d pay $40 or $50 with the current state of the show, you know what I mean?
If the show gets better in disc 2, I could totally go $40 for it. I wouldn’t be willing to go $50 unless the show got spectacular early in disc 2. I guess that I’m a little biased after having spent $50 on Lost. I think that a show of that caliber (I’m assuming that Lost is everything everyone says it is…haven’t watched it yet) is worth half of a C note, but Veronica Mars just isn’t there yet.
Annie, don’t get me wrong. I really like Veronica Mars. I just can’t say that it is the best series I have come across recently. And yes, I think most of the acting is mediocre, like Percy Daggs (Wallace) and Teddy Dunn’s (Duncan) performances. I just don’t believe their characters.
I do like Kristen Bell (Veronica), Jason Dohring (Logan) and Enrico Colantoni (Kieth Mars). I not only like their performances, but I like their characters, even Logan. After watching the fourth episode, you sort of get the feeling that there is a lot more to Logan than just being a spoiled rich kid. I don’t get that same feeling about Duncan.
I don’t know, maybe I’m just spoiled by the first three seasons of Alias, the first four seasons of The West Wing, and Firefly. Other shows that have piqued my interest are How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men; both are very funny.
therein lies the evils of Best Buy.. i keep buying tons of dvd’s, they send me more Reward Zone Gift Certificates, which i use to buy more dvd’s..
but i think i’ll wait. something like 8-9 weeks ’til xmas; too many gifts to give. and i’m in the same boat on the Lost s1 set, haven’t touched it. same with the Battlestar Galactica set too.. and The Muppet Show.. and those Batman:TAS sets..
Hang in there with VM Mark! There is a lot more to Duncan than meets the eye and a lot more to Logan as well. There are a ton of suprises coming up for you guys! Get excited!!
I like Annie! She sounds nice.
