It’s been a while

This post is all for Hersch. He thinks that his friends don’t update enough. What he fails to realize is that some of us have other things to do. For example, today I spent the day cleaning and not cleaning the house to get it ready for the HEHS Thespian breakfast tomorrow. Also, I should be going to bed now because I’ve got work. So, yeah, here’s a post to update Hersch on stuff. Oh, and thanks for the note on Audacity, Hersch :-)

Brazilian mayor proposes ban on death

A Brazilian mayor has proposed a ban on death. Cemeteries ran out of space last month, leaving the town of Biritiba Mirim no choice but to force sharing of crypts and burying the dead under walkways. Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids the creation of new cemeteries and the cremation of the dead. Mayor Roberto Pereira da Silva has proposed banning death with hopes that his proposed legislation will allow for exceptions to the national laws.

Rights and freedoms

First off, I have finally created a politics category on my blog. It is about two years overdue. The reason I created it today was that I saw a very good Ask Slashdot today about privacy laws around the world. Reading through the comments, I saw some great (or at least to me they were great) arguments against laws that give government overreaching powers to spy on its citizens.

LCARS

There is a group developing the LCARS interface made famous by Star Trek: TNG. I think that it is amazing that something a few designers came up with almost 15 years ago just as eye candy for a sci-fi show has the possibility of influencing the GUIs of computers in the future.

J’adore Paris

La Tour Eiffel from "Panorama on 360° of Paris"

I found an amazing panoramic view of Paris. The photo is just magnificent. The photograph is by Arnaud Frich. His site has a bunch of his photographs, although it is a bit cumbersome to navigate through. I really like his panoramics, as well as some of his street-level photos. I’ll be adding a framed print of one of his photographs to my imaginary wish list; I can’t seem to find any place that has them for sale. If you know of a place that sells an authorized print in a large size, please let me know.

Comic book habit

"Comic book habit" from toothpaste for dinner

I saw this today at toothpaste for dinner and I’m just thinking what I would be like if I were to find a comic book in my kid’s stuff. I mean, I loved comic books as a kid. I loved the stories. I loved the artwork (Jim Lee rocks). Then I started realizing that the publishers were out to make a quick buck with all of the collectors editions, special foil stamping, embossing and holograms (damn you, Fatal Attractions!). I started to feel like crossovers were happening just so that the publishers could bank on people buying a book they otherwise wouldn’t because the stories in that book were generally weak. Wow, I’m getting way off track here. This aside is for an entire series of posts about why I stopped reading comic books.

I was just thinking that this cartoon was hilarious, but not. You know? What would I be like if I continued my obsessive comic book reading? While I would know more about the X-Men universe, would I know quite as much about computers and technology? Would I have gone to art school instead of a liberal arts institution?

Daily del.icio.us

To continue my never-ending praise of del.icio.us, here is a great tip from Kevin Lim: use del.icio.us to post your links daily. I’ve just set it up, and I can’t wait until tomorrow when I can see what it posts for my links. I’m looking forward to trying to tweak it to do my bidding, but that may have to wait. I still have a couple other projects to finish.
