del.icio.us how to

I was checking out del.icio.us/popular after hooking up the TiVo to the network when I came across Slacker Manager’s post on using del.icio.us. He’s got a bunch of great tips on using the service, some of which I didn’t know. For example, I never really bothered to figure out how to use the inbox. Now I know that it’s even simpler than I thought it was :-) So, if you’ve never tried del.icio.us, give the post a quick once-over and give del.icio.us a try. My links can be found at del.icio.us/markomni.

Wiki Prankster Unmasked

Here is another great post I found at digg while compiling my list of winter break tasks. Daniel Brandt, a book indexer by trade, investigated the story after reading about John Seigenthaler Sr.’s made up entry in Wikipedia. Brandt runs an anti-Wikipedia site called Wikipedia Watch. From the digg post:

It started as a joke and ended up as a shot heard round the Internet, with the joker losing his job and Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, suffering a blow to its credibility.

Revenge of the Nerd Tattoos

I found this over at digg.com today:

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been talking to people with "nerdy" tattoos — computer logos, video game themes, science, math, and engineering imagery.

If I could get past the idea of getting stabbed repeatedly by a needle, I would love to have the 1UP ’shroom and Pac·Man on my shoulders.

Serenity almost in the black

Serenity has almost broken even with box office sales alone. You can take a look at the numbers provided by Box Office Mojo and see that the movie is just shy of being profitable. However, this is a far cry from the $80 million I have heard that Joss would like to see before he does any other Firefly movies. I would really like to see more of the story, personally. So, I hope that DVD sales do well.

Wallpapers

If you check out my del.icio.us links, you’ll find a new one pointing to joejoe’s Wallpapers. I just stumbled upon this page from del.icio.us/popular (I know, shocking, isn’t it?). There are some great images there to use as your desktop wallpaper. Obviously they will work on MacOS, Windows and Linux, or anything else where you can use a JPEG image. So, if you’ve been looking for some good wallpaper and don’t feel like browsing through WebShots or some other obnoxious websites, try joejoe’s page.

Charlie Brown Christmas

There almost wasn’t a Christmas for Charlie Brown. I’m not going to have time to write more about this, so just go read the article.

SlimServer

After skimming a review of the Slim Devices Squeezebox on /., I decided to give Slim Devices’ free SlimServer a shot. SlimServer lets you easily run a streaming music server on your computer. And that is no joke: it was simple to setup and easy to use. In fact, I have used it today to stream music from home to my desktop computer at work.

I downloaded and installed SlimServer at home, then I setup my router to forward traffic on the appropriate port (in this case, port 9000) to my desktop. I logged into the web control panel that is installed with SlimServer. I had it search for my iTunes library, which it quickly found and started adding my music to its own library. I put together a quick random playlist because I haven’t had it import my playlists yet (I’ll have to check on that later), and I opened up the stream in iTunes at work. It came in crystal clear without any skipping.

The next thing I want to test is how well it supports multiple listeners. If the listeners are all on my LAN at home, it probably won’t skip a beat (pun intended), but listeners on the other side of my router may have some trouble because of my limited upload bandwidth. I’ll have to get some people to login to my stream (yes, I put a password on it) and see if it degrades at all.

So, if you’re like me and you would like to have access to your music from home anywhere you have an internet connection, give SlimServer a try. It’s free and it’s easy to use.
