More Brokeback Mountain humor

Boondocks just keeps it coming this week. I didn’t post the last couple of days’ strips, but here is today’s:

Boondocks 2005-12-09

This is what happens when you go to movies and don’t know what they’re about. It’s not really a problem for an open-minded person, but even then, if it’s completely something you are not expecting, it can really throw you for a loop.

And I am sure Chris will bring this up, so I will pre-emptively bring it up myself: I may have subconsciously done something similar to Chris and Tracy when I suggested Any Given Sunday one night back in college. It was entirely too much football for them when they weren’t quite expecting that much football.

Snow everywhere!

I just pushed my car up the driveway with Chris in the driver seat when she couldn’t get it all the way up to the garage after a long night of rehearsals at the school! I wonder where A+ is with their plows. On the one hand, that means they probably aren’t coming twice tonight, so I only have to pay for one service. :-) On the other hand, that means I had to push the car through three or four inches of snow on the driveway! :-(

As an aside, a Southwest Airlines jet slid off of Midway’s runway and into the streets of Chicago, killing a 6-year-old boy! Preliminary investigations are focusing on the weather and the pilot, but there is nothing conclusive right now. 33 years ago to the day, a United Airlines jet crashed into a home on an approach to Midway.

WP Tiger Administrator plugin

I just fell in love with the Tiger Administration plugin for WordPress. The plugin, once activated, themes the WP-Admin pages of a WordPress installation. The theme is along the lines of OS X Tiger, hence the name. Currently it only works with Firefox, but it degrades nicely to the original WP-Admin theme in other browsers.

This is just the thing that WordPress needed to unclunkify the administration panels. Unfortunately, in Owen Winkler’s reports on what’s new in WP 2.0, he states that the admin redesign is not as significant as the Tiger plugin. I just hope the plugin will continue to work in the WP 2.0.

So, check out the screenshots on the page linked above. To the people whose blogs I host here at ask-mark.com: if you would like the plugin installed and activated on your blogs, just let me know. Believe me when I say this: it is an excellent plugin!

Prohibiting the spread of cancer

Cancer researchers have discovered how cancer spreads. The new research has shown that cancerous cells send out scouting cells or agents that find and prepare new sites to which the cancer can spread. The spreading cancer is called metastasis. Now researchers are trying to discover how to prevent metastasis, or treating patients in whom metastasis has already occurred. It is when a cancer spreads to other organs that it becomes all the more difficult to treat. From the article:

"The authors show that tumor cells can mobilize normal bone marrow cells, causing them to migrate to particular regions and change the local environment so as to attract and support a developing metastasis," Patricia Steeg, of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, said in a commentary.

Cells at the site of the metastasis multiply and produce a protein called fibronectin, which acts like a glue to attract and trap the bone marrow cells to create a landing pad or nest for the cancer cells.

"These nests provide attachment factors for the tumor cells to implant and nurture them. It causes them not only to bind but to proliferate. Once that all takes place we have a fully formed metastatic site or secondary tumor," said Lyden.

"This is the first time anyone has discovered what we call the pre-metastatic niche."

You know, in high school I always dreamed of going to IWU, getting my degree in biology, then going on to research cancer and find the cure. How naïve I was back then. At this point, I’d settle for reporting about the cure for cancer.

Rock, Paper, Saddam!

Thank you to Dee for pointing me to this funny site: Rock, Paper, Saddam!. I only had time to see the original version, but I’ll be checking out the new version later today. Enjoy!

Mozilla search plugin

I just finished creating my first Mozilla search plugin. You can find it at the mycroft site, or download it using the button on the sidebar. Of course, this requires Mozilla or Firefox, or another browser that supports the search plugins.

The plugin will allow you to search ask-mark.com from the comfort of your Mozilla search bar. Now you don’t even have to visit my site to search. The search bar does it all for you, and it even uses Google to display the results. Enjoy.

And it gets better
