Moving to K2

Michael Heilmann and Chris Davis have been working on a new Wordpress theme called K2. It is currently in its second beta, and it is looking quite nice. It actually looks nice enough to me that I will be moving my theme over to K2 and adding my various customizations to it within the next few weeks.

For those of you whose blogs I host here, K2 is already available to you. If you want the latest beta, let me know and I’ll upload it for you, replacing the version that came with WordPress 2.0.1. And Grant, try posting something one of these days.

Best weekend ever

omg, I can’t even explain how great this weekend has been so far. On Friday, we went to Howl at the Moon to celebrate Cristina Sanchez’s birthday. It was a great time, getting to know better the friends we recently met through Mike. After leaving the bar, we went back to Joe and Cristina’s place and hung out for the rest of the night. I found out that while I was a little rust at Mario Kart on Gamecube, after a couple of rounds I was back kicking a little ass here and there. Fun times!

Tonight was Michelle’s birthday dinner at Texas de Brazil, which is a Brazilian steakhouse, or Churrascaria. They have a buffet table with salads, various meats and cheeses, fish, rice, vegetables and soup. After you get some food from the buffet, you sit at your table while servers bring skewers of various meats to you. Like the buffet, the meat is all you can eat. You get a small green and red button to easily let the servers know whether you would like more meat or if you would like to take a break for a while.

The price per seat is not cheap at around $43 per person at Woodfield, but the quality of the food, as well as the quantity, are deserving of the price if you come with a plan to eat. And the service was outstanding. Marcelo was our primary server, and he was very attentative to our needs all night long. The other waitstaff and servers were very friendly, and many of them even remembered Michelle and Rol from previous visits! Like I said, outstanding.

With the weekend not over yet, I am anticipating what it will bring for tomorrow. We definitely want to go back to Howl at the Moon and Texas de Brazil at some point in the future. I don’t know that we would want to frequent Howl at the Moon, but if the price were more affordable, we would definitely frequent Texas de Brazil.

Welcome to the fold

I’ve been meaning to do this for the past week, but with all of the DNS problems and other things going on, I haven’t had a chance to. I want to welcome Scott to the blogosphere (what a lame word). His new blog is titled Laid Off, referring to his new employment status. Go visit his blog while you’re here.

Iraqtile Dysfunction

Last night Chris and I went to Second City Chicago’s Mainstage with Mike, Vicki and a few others to see Iraqtile Dysfunction. I hadn’t heard anything about the show before, but Chris said she’d only heard good things about it. I think this was my second Second City show, and it was hilarious!

The small cast of six put on a great show. I haven’t really seen any improv or sketch comedy since the siblings graduated from CHS, and I really enjoyed it. I think my favorite part of the show was when Brian Gallivan came out with a gay Puerto Rican accent, playing a customs agent. He interrogated an audience member for about five or ten minutes, and then he and the rest of the cast did a reenactment of of a day in the life of Mrs. LeBrun, a 911 dispatcher. I was almost crying, it was so funny.

The show is definitely not a kids show, partly because of the language (listen to me sounding all grown up and stuff…), and partly because I don’t think very many kids pay enough attention to what’s going on in the world to appreciate some of the humor (at least I didn’t when I was a kid). If you’re looking for something to do at night, check out the Second City Mainstage because it’s just that funny.

More perspective

Elliptical paint jobI just ran across another set of pictures showing off strange perspective paint jobs, including the ones I previously posted. My new favorite is the red hallway with the white ellipse. The first photo of the hallway taken to show the strange pattern is taken from the opposite side of the hallway, rather than being offset from the proper perspective point. Oh, well.

At this point, I just wish there were addresses that came along with the photos so that you could find them.

RAID troubles

I have been trying desperately since October to get a Promise SuperTrak SX6000 RAID 5 controller to work in a Gateway E-6300 computer (actually three different computers). I finally got the FastTrak TX4000 to work last week. Apparently, the problem I was having was that the TX4000 was not showing its BIOS when I booted the computer, and that prevented me from creating an array on which Windows could install itself. Thankfully, I had another hard drive I could use for Windows, then I installed the Promise Array Management (PAM) utility to create an array for Windows.

Finally able to get the TX4000 to boot, I was hoping that perhaps the SX6000 was also not working because of some small detail I had overlooked. Unfortunately, that does not look to be the case. After trying several different configurations of the RAID controllers in various PCI slots, sometimes using both, sometimes using just the SX6000, I was never able to get the computer to get past the POST.

So, I am waiting to hear from Promise tech support about what to do. I have not been a big fan of phone tech support, having been on both ends of the call. I am not looking forward to calling them, if I have to. I hope they’ll give me an RMA, since CDW-G was not so helpful.

Jessi’s day out

Yesterday we all had a day out for Jessi, just before she’ll be leaving for Japan later this week. Since my new camera came in on Friday, I took it with me to record some of the memories (this is starting to sound like Hersch wrote it). Check out the photoset on Flickr. Some of the photos have been marked private to protect the innocent. You’ll need to sign up for an account and get added to my friends or family list to view them.

To start off Jessi’s day, we went to Richard Walker’s in Schaumburg for breakfast. After that, we headed into Chicago to visit the Field Museum. After the Field Museum, a decision was made to visit the Art Institute. After wandering the various galleries and exhibits in both museums, we headed back out to the ‘burbs for a dinner at Outback.

The day was fun, and we’re all going to miss Jessi when she’s gone. I hope she’ll have fun and enjoy Japan while she’s there.

Update: Those with a Yahoo! account can already use Flickr.
