Wrap up

It’s been a few days since I’ve last posted, and even longer since I’ve posted something of substance. Quite a bit has happened in the past week. Let’s see if I remember what’s up.

I finally called Dish Network about our busted receiver. It was out of warrantee, so I had it replaced with a dual-tuner DVR box. Now, we can watch something live while recording something at the same time. And when you include the TiVo and our other Dish Network DVR, that gives us the ability to record up to four events at once. Of course, we don’t have the time to watch TV live, and we probalby don’t have enough time to watch all the things we’ll record, either.

Our treadmill is not 100% functional right now. While running one day, the treadmill started making high pitch sqeeling noises with every step. I have to call Nordic Track to see if we can get it repaired. Hopefully this won’t take the time I’ve taken to fix (or not fix, as the case may be) our bathroom.

PHS is currently looking for a Network Technician to replace Bob, who has left for another job. I’m looking forward to hearing about some new ideas and getting a different perspective from the new NT.

Saturday, Rich and I helped my mom move my sister from her dorm at ISU to an apartment in Normal. She’s got a summer internship with the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, so she’ll be living in Normal for most of the summer. Before leaving, I setup a wireless access point in her apartment so that she could roam freely without having to be tethered to the wall in her room.

When Rich and I got back to town, we went over to Mike’s house. Chris was already there, as well as Vicki, Bertoni and Gral. We ended up playing poker, after Chris crashed on the couch for a while. Mike took the final hand from me. We both had an Ace and a Seven, but he had the nut flush. I like playing poker, possibly even more so because when I’m having a good night, it’s damn near impossible for the others to read me :-)

That’s all I remember for now. I believe there is some burger-eating going on Monday night, but I’m not sure of the details. Perhaps I’ll check out Geek Spotting for the 411.

Bertoni? Gral? What does that make you two? Chrark?

Sounds like you lot had a blast. I hope that Mello likes her gig with ISF.

    Miss you lot!

    Markris?

I thought we were the Ordoni (or is that Ordonei or Ordonii?).

  4. 4 Giancola

    I believe Ordonii…

Or possibly Ordoni with a tilda over the n…

I can’t believe I am about to weigh in on this exchange, but here goes:

It can’t be Ordonii unless you want to pronounce each of the two i’s individually (as in Hawaii)…phonetically, it would be Or-don-eee-aye (”aye” sounds like the word “I” as in “aye, Captain”). My vote goes to Ordoni with an enye (n with tilda) instead of a normal “n”. For all our sakes, we should now talk about something else.

Forgive my misspelling…it is tilde, not tilda.

Either way, I’m not going to bother to learn anytime soon how to type it on a 104-key US keyboard. If anyone is wondering, it’s code 241 - ñ. I didn’t learn it, I looked it up on my bulletin board — I have a character entity reference sheet *cough*geek*cough*

Oh right. The Ordoni — I’m a freaking moron. I kept spelling it Ordonii, just cuz I thought it looked cooler. I would actually put a “-” over the [i], now that I think about it. I think I call you the Ordon’ai in the story. Hmmm…

Anyway, sorry for totally forgetting that.

I’m glad Jessi’s thing is cleared up. First of all, since Mark leaves out the tilde in spelling, but pronounces it anyway, we should too. On spelling this weird plural, it’s a hard one, but “Ordoni” doesn’t work for me. I suppose my problem comes from the fact that “Ordonez” is a Spanish name, and “-i” would make it Ordonyee. The fact that it will be used in proximity to the newly coined “Bertoni,” and Mark’s former use of “MarkOmni” creates a strong chance of a miscue. People will read “Ordonee” or “Ordonyee.”

The better candidate, to me, is “-ae.” It has some relation to the latin roots of the Spanish word. It is pronounced “eye” and is, like “-i”, a plural ending in Latin. The feminist in me (stop laughing, Chris), likes the fact that “-ae” is more often used for feminine nouns and “-i” for masculine. Chris took Mark’s name, the least we can do is give her the more feminized spelling of the odd new word.

Seems like I’m just time to chime in on a hot discussion topic. My vote goes to the version ending in “-ae.” I see that the previously available position of PHS Net Tech was mentioned in your post. ***All’s well that ends well….*** New blood is always a good thing.

@Fatimma: If I haven’t said it before, welcome aboard! Congratulations on the new job. I’m sure you will do just fine. Now, if nobody’s told you, you are supposed to bring coffee to the NT meetings for everyone :-) You should call around so we can place orders before the meetings.
