Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, was killed this morning when a stingray pierced his heart with its poisonous barbed tail. Irwin was filming off of the Great Barrier Reef when he apparently came too close to the stingray. According to the article, stingray stings, while painful, are rarely fatal.
I didn’t follow his show, but I remember it becoming hugely popular while I was in college. I always thought that he was pretty crazy, and that one day he’d probably end up getting killed. However, I didn’t think it would actually happen, or that it would be such a surrreal event. I mean, the Crocodile Hunter knew his stuff, and he got killed by a stingray?
My Aussie friends were lamenting about this, too. We were also being jerks about it this morning, wondering if there are any crocodiles out there who are all kinds of pissed about it ‘cuz it wasn’t one of them that got him, ya know? With a name like “Crocodile Hunter” ya’d think it would be more fitting that it was a croc that got him.
