I just saw this post on my.9rules, and it is quite a read. Ryan, the original poster and a member of the 9rules network, linked to a PDF titled What to do in a terrorist attack that shows symbols that can be found at ready.gov. The symbols are rather ambiguous, so there are captions included to inform the reader of what they mean.
Last night we had dinner at Asiago. It was pretty good again, but I kind of wish I had ordered the pizza they had as a sampler instead of the paesano. That sampler pizza was really good!
After dinner, we dropped Chris off at home and then headed to the Holzmans. We met Steve and Ryan, two of Joe’s co-workers. They were pretty cool, and Steve is quite the poker player. It was a pretty good night, but a long one. Scott and I didn’t get back to the house until after 2 in the morning! *whack* Chris just smacked me after reading that
That was a good start to the long weekend. Now, back to the job at hand: cleaning up before moving furniture around.
One of the things I have been noticing lately is that as I find myself getting involved in more and more things, I have less time to spend on any one of those things. For example, I recently added PartyPoker.net and my.9rules to my list of online activities. Now I have less time to read my RSS feeds on Google Reader and post on my blog. IRL, Chris and I are trying desperately to prep our living room and dining room for the new furniture, which chews into our socializing and relaxing time. At work, I’m working on project after project. I’m starting to realize that I have to start using larger timeslices as I bounce from task to task in order to actually accomplish something in each timeslice.
I wonder sometimes if it’s all for naught. In the grand scheme of things, am I actually accomplishing anything?
In Salt Lake City, a gunman killed 5 people before being shot to death by police. His motive is still unclear, as he appeared to have been randomly shooting at people. And surprise: in the opening paragraph (sentence, really), the shooter was specifically mentioned wearing a trench coat. I suppose this tidbit adds to the setting of the news story, but it seems hardly important. I doubt his outerwear would have been noted if he was wearing a Utah Jazz jacket or something otherwise nondescript. This is a whole other rant that I could expound on, but won’t at this time.
This is yet another story that seems to have jumped from a Clancy novel, specifically Teeth of the Tiger, where terrorists choose malls across the US as targets.
Update: The gunman was a survivor of a massacre of more than 8,000 Muslims in Serbia during the 1992-95 war.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has recently request that her air transport between D.C. and her home in San Francisco come in the form of a plane with the fuel capacity to make the trip without refueling stops. Since September 11, 2001, the Pentagon has provided the Speaker of the House with a military transport between D.C. and his home. Hastert, an Illinois resident, used a smaller jet to get home.
Some members of the Republican Party are calling her out on this. They say Pelosi’s request "an extravagance of power." The White House disagrees, with spokesman Tony Snow calling it "a silly story…unfair to the speaker." I’m not sure which side of this "issue" I am on. On the one hand, it kind of sucks that mega tax dollars would be spent just to fly the Speaker of the House back to California. On the other hand, she’s the second in line to succeed the President of the United States, and she deserves something that can ensure her safety and quick return to D.C. in a time of national crisis.
So yeah, I don’t know what I think about this. I just hope that a happy middle can be reached. I also just wanted to post this to emphasize how crazy the headlines have been lately.
I was surprised by the headlines I saw in Google Reader this afternoon: Anna Nicole Smith collapsed and died in her hotel room in Florida. All this just months after giving birth to a daughter and then the death of her 20-year-old son Daniel.
What is going on with the strange headlines lately?
