HDTV

Many of you know that I’ve been aching to buy a new HDTV set, especially after Bert and Toni, Joe and Cristina, Brad, and Herschell have each bought one in the past six or seven months. Try as I might, I have been unable to keep up with the Joneses on this one.

Among the reasons for not buying one, the biggest reason is saving up for our trip to Alaska. It’s probably not the smartest thing to go to Alaska and buy a new TV at the same time. Another reason is my reluctance to buy a new HDTV set because of my lack of knowledge/experience with the technology. It’s not like with computer parts, where I can spend a couple of hundred bucks on some new parts and upgrade my system when I please. When you buy a TV, you’re buying something expecting it to last you for quite a few years without being upgraded.

PBS has a good crash course on digital TV by Cringely. I think the content is a few years old. With the exception of the now defunct timeline at the end, the content is good content. So, check it out if you’re curious about HDTV.

The only reason Cristina and I have an HDTV is because we got it so ridiculously cheap…thank god for day after Thanksgiving sales, and friends willing to help you pick up a huge TV at 6 in the dang morning.
