The standard reply around our house to the above question is, "I don’t know." A couple of years ago, I modified a random number generator that a student worker had made for class so that it spit out random restaurants in the area to help answer the question that could plague us for an hour. Someone has made a Web 2.0 version of that program, but much more helpful.
‘
At Miniature Cube, you tell them your location, the restaurant style, your budget and the cuisine, and click on the Decide! button. The site will spit back a restaurant decision for you. If you don’t like that decision, use the Re-decide? sidebar to have the site make another decision for you. The site is still in its infancy, so the reviews are are sparse. Hopefully the site will grow, and it will become more useful. Only time will tell if it will be another bust.
Among the nuggets of neat information is that flatulence is 99% non-odorous gases carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and methane. The 1% that announces your work to the world is made up of waste gases produced by microorganisms that break down complex carbohydrates. What foods create the room-clearing odors, and what foods are safe to eat before an important date or meeting? Here is what the article says:
Nutritionists have long known that while there are many kinds of carbohydrates present in food, Levitt says, not all of them are digestible. Generally it is only the simplest carbohydrates, made up of the simplest sugars, that we’re able to process. Some complex carbohydrates– those made up of three or four sugar molecules–can’t be broken down by normal metabolism. When these get into the digestive tract, they are simply passed along to the colon, where the intestinal flora get hold of them.
Among the foods with the fewest complex carbohydrates and thus the fewest flatulent consequences are meat, fish, grapes, berries, potato chips, nuts, and eggs–the so-called normoflatugenic foods. Further up the gaseousness scale are pastries, potatoes, citrus fruits, apples, and breads, all of which contain some complex sugars, and thus some potential for flatulent fallout. At the top of the explosiveness list are the Fat Man and Little Boy of our diets–those foods that are practically nothing but complex sugars. Among these most eruptive edibles are beans, carrots, raisins, bananas, onions, milk, and milk products.
The remainder of the article is an interesting read, indeed. If you’re at all curious about flatulence, and who isn’t, read the article.
I personally let the drinking fountain run for at least a few seconds before I bend down to take a drink from it. I may let it run for a few more seconds after having read that.
Monica Emmerson was trying to catch a flight at Reagan National Airport with her husband and their small child (I have read that the child is aged 18-, 19- and 20-months, by different sources). While going through a security checkpoint, she was questioned about the liquid contents of her child’s sippy cup. The events that followed tell me that the terrorists may have won, with or without a timetable for our troops’ withdrawal from the Middle East. You can read Emmerson’s account of the events at BoingBoing or at NowPublic.com. There is a little more Truthy, too and at The Washington Post.
Sometimes I wonder if I should be looking forward to travelling to Alaska, or if I should dread it because of the visits to the airports.
Think the post’s title being yelled by Darth Vader in a newly minted body suit. Now, think about watching that scene, and how pitiful it was to see in a Star Wars movie. That’s just about how I feel after reading that Bob Barker is backing Rosie O’Donnell to host TPIR.
Yes, that’s right, CNN is reporting that Bob is backing the incorrectly labeled Queen of Nice to be his replacement as the host of The Price is Right. Why, oh why would he do such a thing?
If Rosie returns to her dirty comic roots, I think I can reconcile with Bob’s decision to back her. Otherwise, I’d rather her nice act stays away from TPIR.
I saw this on YouTube last night, but I didn’t watch the video. Then I heard about it on Eric & Kathy this morning, so I ran downstairs to watch it. It’s pretty ridiculous. I’m not sure if it’s taken from another song, but the beat is catchy. Watch it here:
Also, the video reminded me of an Obama T-shirt that Jacqui posted.
I have been scheduling time off from work here and there during June, since it is the last chance I get to use up my vacation time for the last school year. With it, I have taken care of a few things around the house that I have wanted to do for the past few years.
As I posted earlier, over the past couple of weeks I have done a lot to clear out the junk in my office. Much of it was old magazines that had sat in the Uhaul boxes we used to move from the apartment. I’m sure it ticked off the recycling and refuse truck drivers to come up to our driveway to see the large piles of junk that would need to be hauled off.
The other day, Grant and Mel helped me to move the old dining room table into my office to act as my new desk. I shoved my old computer desk that we got from Chris’ grandparents in the corner until I can clear it off. Then I’m going to swap that desk for my really old computer desk, the one I had in college. That desk is a little bit smaller, so it should fit in between my new desk and the wall much better. It’s also a tad bit taller, at a height that will be much better for working on computers while standing.
Yesterday, I originally was going to take the entire day off, but I had to go into work in the morning to attend a meeting that was scheduled at the last minute. I still took the afternoon off, so I was able to just relax. Dinner at Barnaby’s was great, and it was all the better that we were able to use the gift certificate we won in a raffle at the Coakley autism fund raiser. Afterwards, Brad, Rich, Chris and I just hung out in the front yard with Dixie on her long leash.
Today, I’m taking a full day off. I have already worked out and had breakfast. Unfortunately, I missed McDonald’s switch over from breakfast to lunch by about ten minutes. I had to settle for a bagel and coffee at home. It’s probably healthier that way, so I guess it’s not too bad. I’ve been working on setting up my office some more. I’m clearing off the old desk, and putting various things in their place. This post is acting as a short break for me. However, this short break has now lasted roughly thirty minutes.
I’m going to get back to working on my office, but first, lunch
