Chuck’s new girl

by Mark on Nov.13, 2007, under general

I just got a chance to see Monday’s episode of Chuck, and the show is really developing. Just when I thought that the show couldn’t get much more entertaining, Rachel Bilson gets tossed into the mix as Lou, a sandwich shop owner who came to Chuck to get her phone fixed. It appears as though Bilson’s Lou could be a mid-season replacement for C.S. Lee’s Harry Tang (I love that name), the overly bossy Buy More assistant manager.

Lou’s arrival puts a wedge between Chuck and Sarah. Chuck falls for Lou right away, but he can’t pursue her without risking his cover. Sarah tells Chuck that their "relationship" is not destined for romance, seemingly hiding her true feelings to protect the operation. With that cue, Chuck "breaks up" with Sarah to go after Lou, while still maintaining his cover story.

It has been interesting seeing how the relationships developed between the various characters over the first eight episodes. It is reminiscent of the characters from Firefly, another show with Adam Baldwin. The separate character stories are interwoven into a great storytelling framework. Even though that framework is seemingly limited because of the genre, each week is bringing a show worth watching.

I hope that the writers’ strike doesn’t prevent me from seeing Chuck through its first season. The same goes for The Big Bang Theory, Samantha Who?, Big Shots, Gossip Girl and Reaper.

I agree completely. The last two episodes of Chuck especially have been outstanding television. I am still curious as to how long the show can go, surely there will come a point where a new intercept is built, and then what? They will have planned for that, of course, so I guess I’ll just look forward to seeing how it plays out.

Joe: The way I see it, even if a new intercept is built, the secrets in Chuck’s head have to find a way into the new intercept. Also, in the previous episode, Chuck vs. the Alma Mater, Bryce was shown to not be the bad guy he was initially made out to be. His sending the intercept data to Chuck alludes to some sort of conspiracy that Chuck, Sarah and Casey must uncover by the series’ end, if not by the season’s end. This is much like the Reavers in Firefly (and if that tidbit spoiled anything for you, then tough).

Wow…to someone who has never seen the show, that interchange sounded exceedingly geeky (but, the fact that it has made me want to re-watch Firefly is also instructive as to the overall geekiness distribution here).

    Dramatic twist! Dun dun dun!

I went out for my mom’s birthday last night, so I haven’t had a chance to watch the new episode yet. Chris will be busy with musical stuff, so tonight will be spent catching up with yesterday’s TV, plus stuff from the past two weeks that I have missed.
