The return of Windows

Thursday, January 3rd, I finally got around to re-installing Windows on my work laptop (yes, this post has taken a while to complete). I decided on Vista over XP, because I know that I will have at least one virtual machine running Windows XP with our "base" software configuration. If I still want to keep playing with Linux, I can also run it in a virtual machine, although I probably won’t be able to utilize fun stuff like compiz. Just like the last time, I had a pain in the ass trying to find the drivers for my laptop’s hardware. Specifically, I had trouble finding the Bluetooth drivers and the updated drivers for several devices. Read on to find out more about my continuing journey to setup my work laptop, starting with my trouble activating Vista.

MPR’s Select a Candidate

I took the Select a Candidate survey published by Minnesota Public Radio after seeing Scott’s post about it. The results were about what I expected. Here are my top 3, not surprisingly:

  1. Obama - 19.0
  2. Clinton - 17.0
  3. Edwards - 17.0

Don’t look up

If you are a television news reporter who is reporting on a bird infestation, don’t look up if a bird leaves a present on your shoulder. It only leads to bad news:

You’re my Guitar Hero

Chris and I went to Target today to buy some stuff that we needed (or wanted, however you want to look at it). After getting the stuff we came for, we took a stroll around the store. When we got to the video game section, I went to check out the Wii games. That’s when I saw it: Guitar Hero III for the Wii was available!

I quickly grabbed the game, and we headed for the registers. I’m unboxing the game now, and we’re going to be playing for a while.

Blue-green swirls

This will keep you busy for hours just screwing around with it. Just move your mouse cursor over the black area below and see what happens.

I found the original applet at this page. It was easy enough to download the .jar file and include it in the post.

Macworld keynote

I am trying to find updates on the 2008 Macworld Keynote, but it appears that both Twitter and GeekBrief.tv are coincidentally down at the start of the keynote, if not because of additional traffic prompted by the keynote. However, Ars Technica is still going strong :-) Go, Jacqui and Clint!

SeeItNext.com

What is SeeItNext.com? I saw a commercial for the website when I watched American Gladiators tonight (btw, AG is a great show and it brings back so many memories). I went to the site, and it has an aerial photo of Chicago at night (the Citicorp Center, One and Two Prudential Plaza, and the AON Center give it away), as well as showing the video seen in the commercial. The commercial reveals a clue: In the general’s north chamber the future is revealed. A Google search for the phrase reveals a couple of interesting nuggets of information, including a digg item linking to an eBay auction of DVDs that includes the phrase in the description. The DVDs don’t jump out at me, but then again I have only seen the Friends season finale (when it was originally aired).

Do you have any ideas as to what this all means? The website says, "The future will be revealed on February 4th." Hopefully I’ll know what’s going on before then.

Update: Signs are leaning toward the Chicago Auto Show theories being correct. But we have just over a week left until we find out. In the meantime, here are the two videos posted by YouTube user seeitnext:

That was the first video posted on the SeeItNext.com website. Here is the second video posted on the site:

That creepy-looking kid in the photograph doesn’t really give me a clue as to what is going on, but a forum post at GMInsideNews tries to link this all to the new Chevy Traverse. I guess we still have to keep on guessing.
