In the past several months I have finally joined three of the most popular social networks (LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter), and returned to another one (digg). All the while, of course, I have still been using Flickr, del.icio.us and (if you consider it a social network) Google Reader. I even have a MySpace, although I have really only kept it for snooping around MySpace for work.
Honestly, I am not sure what has kept me from jumping into the fray. Almost five years ago, I made my first blog post that exclaimed how late I was getting into blogging, much like this post about social networks. Now, I blog on a fairly regular basis, and I take pride in it. I don’t know what I will get out of the social network scene, as I am not necessarily looking for new employment or new friends. Of course, if a new job or a new friend comes along, I wouldn’t dismiss it.
One of the things I am finding is that I am able to connect with long lost acquaintances and friends. For example, I have connected with several friends with whom I have not spoken since elementary school (one since 1st grade). I am also able to find out about so many new things. Via a friend’s twitter, I just read about these really great ties from Sugar Chicago.
I’m starting to read up on all the other great things you can do with these sites, and I’m pretty excited about it all. I just hope I am able to find the time to take care of my online persona.
