I have been using Gmail’s IMAP access for my Gmail account, as well as for my ask-mark.com e-mail that I have hosted with Gmail. I use Thunderbird to check my five e-mail accounts hosted with Gmail, all using IMAP. This has worked out great since I first posted about it back in October. That all changed yesterday.
About every three hours or so that I have Thunderbird open, I receive an error message that IMAP is not available with one of my ask-mark.com e-mail accounts. I log into the web interface, and the settings show that I only have POP3 access outside of the web interface. I log out and log into another account, but that one shows that I have both POP3 and IMAP access available. When I check the first account again, I find that IMAP has mysteriously returned.
When I open up Thunderbird again, I can check all of my accounts without any error messages. I thought it was a temporary glitch. A few hours later, I found I was wrong. It happened again, and again I checked the web to find IMAP access missing and reappearing. The Gmail Help Discussion at Google Groups told me that I wasn’t alone in this. A popular solution appears to be logging into and out of Gmail. I would have to say that it works for me, if only for a short period of time.
I guess I have to wait and see what comes of this. I’ve only done this three times now, but it’s starting to get pretty annoying having to close out of Thunderbird and log into the web interface. I hope Google finishes whatever upgrade or fixes whatever the problem is soon.
