A few things

Here are just a few things for tonight:

  • I have only been using twitter for a few weeks, but I am to the point where twitter is on the fritz again and I don’t know what to do. It’s the strangest feeling.
  • I ordered that Garmin StreetPilot c550 from Buy.com the other day, but they haven’t shipped it yet. I’m going to be leaving for Seattle next Friday, and I’m worried it might not get here in time. Update: According to FedEx, it should arrive on Tuesday.
  • Miro has been acting up a lot lately, unexpectedly skipping to the next video, only playing audio for some video, and doing similarly bothersome things. I’m starting to wonder if I should check iTunes for some of the video podcasts I subscribe to in Miro.
  • I really want a Drobo, but I can’t justify spending almost $700 for the storage robot and NAS accessory. Even with the $50 off with the “CALI” coupon code, it’s still too expensive for a system that does not come with any disks.
  • I haven’t watched tonight’s episode of Lost. My internet just got slow because Miro kicked in. I’ll have to try to watch that tomorrow before I see the other cast of Evita at HEHS. Update: I did watch Lost, and it was pretty good, but not my favorite. They are starting to tread in waters that may be too far off shore to get back.

That’s pretty much it for now. I’m going to try to get some sleep. I’ll be hitting the ICE conference in the morning, checking out what’s new on the educational technology front.

Tastes much better than it looks

2008-02-27 001Tonight, Grant and I made scallops served atop fettuccine with a garlic and white wine cream sauce. We modified this recipe from Allrecipes.com to make a sauce more appropriate to be served with pasta. We added more cream and white wine, subtracted some butter and added some Parmesan cheese. We’re not really sure how much more cream, wine or cheese we added, but it’s pretty safe to say that we only added a stick and a half two sticks of butter to the sauce.

The scallops were prepared almost as directed in the above recipe, except that we doubled the cooking time for each side because of the size of the scallops.

Overall, the dish was quite tasty. However, I wonder if this will be yet another dish that I would rather just go to a restaurant and order rather than make it myself.

Election results and celestial bodies

In a stunning revelation that is sure to upset the governing overlords, today Diebold leaked the 2008 Presidential election results, more than eight months ahead of schedule. For many years, the winner of the Presidential election was not publicly announced before noon on Election Day, at which point the governing overlords assumed that there were enough votes cast to safely "call" a winner without arousing suspicions. Not so this year. Any voter can walk into the booth on November 4 confident that his vote does not, in fact, count for anything:

Seeing this news story reminds me of when I discovered professional wrestling was just a couple of stage actors groping each other in their underwear.

Delicious Library

Delicious LibraryI wish I had a Mac. While I love the "Unix underpinnings," the reason I really want a Macright now is Delicious Library. This software is so unbelievably awesome at managing a personal library of books, movies, music and video games, and it’s only $40!

Using just about any webcam, scan the bar code from the item you want to add to your library. DL will search for your item and add it to your library once it is found. It will also include a lot of meta data about the item, such as cover art, publisher, release date, and retail price. DL uses the cover art to display a virtual shelf with your items.

Garmin StreetPilot c550

Garmin StreetPilot c550I just bought a refurbished Garmin StreetPilot c550 from Buy.com. Thanks to SlickDeals for the link. The product description on Buy.com’s site was lifted directly from the Garmin lsiting. This GPS unit should help me navigate Seattle next month, and it should also come in handy for a road trip this summer.

Initially, I was looking for a Bluetooth-enabled GPS unit that I could use with my PDA or my laptop, but I think this will suit my needs better. The unit has Bluetooth, but only to act as a hands-free speakerphone for a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. The c550 also has a touchscreen, voice directions, 2D and 3D maps, and uploadable points-of-interest (POIs). It was a lot of features that I could not pass up for the price.

OpenID support enabled

I have enabled OpenID support for the blog thanks to VerseLogic’s OpenID plugin. With OpenID you can authenticate to supporting sites using a URL you control. As long as you are authenticated to your OpenID provider, you can quickly authenticate with any other OpenID site. The first time you log into a site with OpenID, you can quickly create a profile by sharing information with your OpenID provider and the new website.

I did not opt to manage my own OpenID yet, but if I like phpMyID after taking a good look at it, I might just manage my OpenID with it. I am going to see about implementing OpenID on blogho.us, but that looks like it will require some extra effort. Perhaps it will be worth it, though, if I migrate over the other blogs hosted here. I have been wanting to do that for some time, since ask-mark.com was never really meant to be anything more than a place for me to vent. I think it would serve the other blogs better to be on their own domain. Maybe blogho.us isn’t it, though. I’ll have to figure that out later.

Right now, I’ve got to get ready for Cristina’s birthday party.

Living the dream

It’s Friday night, and I’m living the dream. OK, that’s not exactly true. I’m not out with friends, flying to a spectacular vacation destination, or even out at a movie. Nope, none of that. I’m sitting at home, just Dixie and me. I just ordered the Lou Malnati’s pizzas that Chris wants for the musical directors gathering she’s having after tonight’s show. Other than that, so far I have been doing a lot of catching up on my RSS feeds in Google Reader and watching YouTube videos (I just re-discoveredand communitychannel), and I may turn on the latest episode of Lost (no, I didn’t watch that last night, either).

A few months ago I was going stir crazy having spent most evening with the TV and/or computer, but tonight it just feels right not going out or doing anything. Perhaps that’s just a sign of how tired I have been. I’m finding this time without extra distractions to be quite relaxing. Perhaps I’ll just play some music instead of watching Lost now that I’m done with YouTube for now.
