Top Chef, or people who ruined pizza

After we got back from dinner at Stumbling Goat Bistro, we set ourselves up to watch the season premiere of Bravo’s Top Chef. This season takes place in Chicago. After the chefs fly in, they all meet at Pizzeria Uno and chow down on deep dish pizza and beer, a classic combo. The first quickfire challenge has the chefs making a signature deep dish pizza.
The chefs bring their pizzas to a house to be judged by Rocco Dispirito. As they bring out their slices, I am just disgusted by each creation. I can’t believe these guys served the garbage that they did. You can see for yourself just how ugly, and likely how distasteful, the slices were.
With what I saw of the last season of Top Chef, and despite what I saw tonight, I think this could be another Bravo show to suck up my time each week.

For the record, I think that Pizzeria Uno (and Due, to be technical) is(are) rather overrated. It(they) doesn’t(don’t) even make my top five for favorite deep dish pizzas.

@Scott: I am not exactly sure what I spoiled, except for the fact that the pizzas were horrible. You saw everything else in the teaser ads.
@Joe: Pizzeria Uno is overrated, but I also only get deep dish pizza from the bigger chains. Those include Lou Malnati’s, Pizzeria Uno, and Gino’s East. That is pretty much because that’s all I know. We’ll have to get pizza from other places some time to expand my horizons (and bump up my cholesterol levels).

@Mark: That sounds like a great idea. I have a couple places in mind that I enjoy greatly that you likely haven’t tried, I look forward to introducing you to new hieghts of unhealthiness.

@Mark: I hadnt seen the previews on purpose so I wouldnt know that the competition would be pizza and that rocco was going to be the guest judge. Also you forgot Giordano’s in your list of deep dish pizza chains. Did you know the order in which they opened: Unos 1943, Ginos east 1966, lou malnatis 1971, giordanos in 1974. Although he opened in 1971 the creator of lous worked at unos in the 40’s with his father.

@Scott: You can’t blame me for your intentional ignorance. Also, I didn’t mention GIordano’s for a reason: I’m not a huge fan. And I did know that Lou Malnati worked at Uno’s.

I looked at the pizzas on the website, and I think I only want to try like two of them.
Uno’s downtown is actually independent from the Uno’s chain restaurants. They just took the name and made a national restaurant off of it. I haven’t done a side-by-side comparison though.
@Scott: For the love of God you better not be serious about avoiding Top-freakin-Chef commercials.

@Grant: When I said that Uno’s/Due’s was overrated, I was speaking of the downtown original version. For those of you who may not be aware, Due’s is across the street from the original Uno’s and is basically an expansion of said restaurant. I’m not sure that I’ve ever had the chain version, so obviously I also have not done a side by side comparison. Would be interesting to do so, though.
