The family jewels

In Chris’s absence tonight, I was planning on catching up on some more network television. That didn’t happen, because I discovered Gene Simmons Family Jewels on A&E (no joke). I know the show has been on for a while (this is the third season, in fact), but this is the first time I bothered to watch it. I was able to catch the three latest episodes, and I really enjoyed them.

It is fun watching what happens when the cameras follow Gene and his family around. Seeing them in hilarious situations reminds me of The Osbournes. In the last episode, Gene yells, "Shannon!", and they zoom out to a shot of the house. It’s just like when Ozzie yelled out, "Sharon!" Hi-larious! There are other obvious parallels, but I will leave those for you to figure out.

I think the show can be enjoyed by a casual watcher, but I found a lot of the humor could be appreciated even more if you understood some of the family background. For example, knowing about Gene’s philosophy on marriage made the polygraph episode really funny. It was also weird seeing the Tweed sisters and what 26 years and plastic surgery has done to them. With all that said, I don’t know that I will schedule the show for the DVR. I will definitely keep the show in mind if there is nothing else on TV. I know, that’s a glowing endorsement.

There was a weird part of the show: Carrot Top showed up to pick up Gene in some small town near Las Vegas. Besides him being the last person I expected Gene to call when stranded on the way to a gig, I was definitely caught off guard by Carrot Top’s buff physique. When the hell did that happen?

Well, if I’m going to get this post up in time for April Fool’s Day, I’d better hit Publish now.
