Welcome to the neighborhood, Sushi Ya
by Mark on May.24, 2009, under general
In the northwest suburbs, I frequent several sushi restaurants: Nobu’s Japanese Restaurant in Schaumburg, Sushi Station in Rolling Meadows, and Wild Fish in Arlington Heights. I like something different about each of them, so it’s hard to pick a favorite, but Sushi Ya in Schaumburg is quickly becoming my new favorite.
After opening about a month late due to construction delays, Sushi Ya is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Michelle and I stopped by the restaurant for dinner Wednesday night, their second night of operation. Two days later I stopped by for dinner with Josh and Marsha before poker night. The staff is very friendly, and I thought the speed of service was pretty good for the first week in business.
The menu has a great variety of food, including staples like edamame, tempura dishes, and sushi combos, as well as hibachi filet mignon, chicken teryaki, and BBQ short ribs. Also on the menu are a good collection of maki (rolls), temaki (hand rolls) and even bento boxes. The sushi deluxe combo is a good size and price, at 12 pieces of nigiri for about $20, which, like all entrees, also includes miso soup and salad. The overall quality of the food and its presentation rivaled the best I have had from the other three restaurants mentioned above.
At my first visit to the restaurant this week, the chef brought out a complementary tempura dish to give us an opportunity to sample other items from the menu. At my second visit, we had the opportunity to sample the BBQ short ribs. Both dishes were great, but I wish they had come out earlier – I felt stuffed by the time the free samples came out!
So, if you’re in the mood for sushi, give Sushi Ya a try. It’s located on Roselle Road, about two blocks south of Schaumburg Road, in the same shopping center as Pita House.

I’ve come around on Sushi Ya. I got their take out menu when they first opened. Their prices seemed high. I’ve since had a chance to sample their take-out a couple times. The prices are justified by their quality and portion sizes. Let’s hope they maintain their standards.
I was also a little put off by the name, thinking this might be a chain. There are several restaurants with the same name in the region. I’m still unsure about whether this restaurant is related to the others, but the feel is authentic and not chain at all.

This is a family owned restaurant, not a chain. We went last night and the food was delicious. This was only our second time eating sushi and we both enjoyed it.
We started off with some tempura shrimp and veggies and the fire avocado. The presentation for all the food was beautiful (the fire avocado came out on a bed of lemons and rice on fire). For dinner we got some rolls and a filet. We were surprised by the size of the portions; we were both stuffed and even had some to take home. My boyfriend knows the family and they were very friendly to us but I noticed that they were also friendly to other customers as well.
I’ll be raving about this one. I can’t wait to go back.

Sushi Ya is definitely authentic! It’s family owned and operated. I worked personally with the family to help designed the space. I went in there for the first time last night with my girlfriend; the food and presentation was fantastic! Had the Schaumburg Maki which was great! The eel melts in the your mouth. Definitely the best Sushi Restaurant I’ve been to in the NW Suburbs! Service was fast and friendly. Very nice menu with a large variety of dishes. Try it out; you won’t be disappointed.

I have returned to Sushi Ya twice since I first posted this. The quality of the food has been consistently very good, I agree, but I think the restaurant needs to work out the kinks in the general dining experience to be a top-notch restaurant.
I am not dissatisfied with the restaurant, but I am left wanting wanting a more streamlined experience. I have always been seated quickly, but the timing of taking my order, getting the various courses to the table, getting a check and paying for the meal hasn’t been as smooth.
I think that hiring a couple more people and a little bit of time will get them to the point where they will need to be to survive in Schaumburg.

I stopped in Sushi Ya last week to order a few maki rolls for take out. The staff was extremely friendly and very willing to serve. Although I noticed the space is small, it has a cozy feel and I look forward to bringing my boyfriend there soon. I ordered the california and asparagus maki rolls. Both were delicious, and you can tell the ingredients were FRESH! I felt the prices were comparable to other quality sushi places I have visited. Can’t wait to go back!

I have gone back to Sushi Ya a few more times in the past couple of months. As always, the quality is top notch. I am also please to say that the service has improved quite a bit. I have noticed at least one new server, and I think it was the additional staff that has made a difference here.
If you’re looking for sushi in Schaumburg, I highly recomment Sushi Ya!
