Get out of my town

Earlier, Chris and I tried to go to dinner with the in-laws at Bavaria Hof in Schaumburg. It’s one of Peter’s favorite restaurants, and he’s leaving for Uganda on Monday morning for a 2+ year stint with the Peace Corps. Unfortunately, Chris and I had to turn around and go home before ever reaching the restaurant.

“Why turn around?”, you may be wondering. The Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove is blocking all north-south traffic on Roselle Road, one of Schaumburg’s four major north-south roadways. You see, the bikers are preventing anyone from crossing Weathersfield Way because of their race.

Now, we have to wait them out before heading to dinner. Sometimes I wish the suburbs stayed a driving town.

Stellar month, part one

This has been a stellar month for me. My last day of work at my old job was July 1st. On July 2nd, Chris and I left for our vacation. Upon our return, we celebrated our 4th anniversary.

It had been a great six years at District 211, but an opportunity came around that I could not pass up. And so I started my new job at Maine Township on Monday. I am the new Assessment and Database Manager for the district. It is a brand new position, which gives me an exciting opportunity to mold the position. At this point, I am expecting that I’ll be data mining standardized test scores and pulling reports for others. I will also be helping to consolidate the various data stores, or at least trying to get them to talk to each other and share nicely. I will have to wait and see over the next year whether or not I’m on the mark.

Another three down

This was a busy weekend. Right now, my body feels like it has walked a thousand miles, but I’m sure it’s closer to ten or fifteen. On Saturday, we ventured into the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. There is a short driving trail, with walking trails along the way. I led the expedition, and the first thing I did as we entered into the park was to go the wrong way on a one-way road. We were able to get ourselves turned around and headed to the beginning of the trail.

Two days down

We’ve been out of the state for two days now. First, we hit up Louisville, and now we’re in Gatlinburg. I woke up this morning to a gorgeous view of the mountainside near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I have another ten days here in Gatlinburg, and then we’re heading down to Ooltewah, near Chattanooga, to visit my aunt and uncle. We’ll have another two days on the road after that, but we haven’t figured out where we’re staying after leaving Ooltewah.

First weekend with the Nokia N95 8GB

DSC04509

A few weeks ago I posted about the Nokia N95 8GB trial I was offered by WOM World. I have had the Nokia N95 8GB for almost an entire weekend now, and here are my first impressions.

TNG is racy

This was posted a few weeks ago on The Daily Dish, but I only just had a chance to watch it. It’s a compilation of TNG clips that shows a racier side to the show. There are parts that are a bit drawn out, so feel free to skip 30 seconds every now and then; there’s almost ten minutes of video!

Gmail IMAP and Lotus Notes 8

With changing school districts, I need to export my 1.5+ GB of e-mail out of Lotus Notes and into something useful to me. Since I have been working on consolidating my many e-mail accounts into just a few Gmail-enabled accounts, Gmail seemed like the natural choice for the export. After all, both Gmail and Lotus Notes support IMAP with SSL. It can’t be that hard, can it?

It was. After about an hour of trying to configure IMAP connections to Gmail using two versions of Lotus Notes, I was finally able to get a connection to work with Lotus Notes 8. Here is what you have to do to get it to work.
