Another three down

This was a busy weekend. Right now, my body feels like it has walked a thousand miles, but I’m sure it’s closer to ten or fifteen. On Saturday, we ventured into the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. There is a short driving trail, with walking trails along the way. I led the expedition, and the first thing I did as we entered into the park was to go the wrong way on a one-way road. We were able to get ourselves turned around and headed to the beginning of the trail.

Two days down

We’ve been out of the state for two days now. First, we hit up Louisville, and now we’re in Gatlinburg. I woke up this morning to a gorgeous view of the mountainside near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I have another ten days here in Gatlinburg, and then we’re heading down to Ooltewah, near Chattanooga, to visit my aunt and uncle. We’ll have another two days on the road after that, but we haven’t figured out where we’re staying after leaving Ooltewah.

First weekend with the Nokia N95 8GB

DSC04509

A few weeks ago I posted about the Nokia N95 8GB trial I was offered by WOM World. I have had the Nokia N95 8GB for almost an entire weekend now, and here are my first impressions.

TNG is racy

This was posted a few weeks ago on The Daily Dish, but I only just had a chance to watch it. It’s a compilation of TNG clips that shows a racier side to the show. There are parts that are a bit drawn out, so feel free to skip 30 seconds every now and then; there’s almost ten minutes of video!

Gmail IMAP and Lotus Notes 8

With changing school districts, I need to export my 1.5+ GB of e-mail out of Lotus Notes and into something useful to me. Since I have been working on consolidating my many e-mail accounts into just a few Gmail-enabled accounts, Gmail seemed like the natural choice for the export. After all, both Gmail and Lotus Notes support IMAP with SSL. It can’t be that hard, can it?

It was. After about an hour of trying to configure IMAP connections to Gmail using two versions of Lotus Notes, I was finally able to get a connection to work with Lotus Notes 8. Here is what you have to do to get it to work.

Exciting news

One bit of news has been known to me for a week now, but I have hesitated to post about it because it has not been finalized. Another bit of news I found out about yesterday. We’ll start with the freshest news: I was accepted into the Northwestern MSIT Program for the Fall of 2008.

The NU MSIT Program is a two-year cohort that is a unique blend (at least in the Chicago area) of business and information technology. The program is also not cheap, at almost $29k for the 2008-2009 academic year. I’ll be looking at student loans to help cover the cost. At the end of the two years, I will have a Master of Science in Information Technology, along with the Northwestern alumni network. I hope that this program will pay off by helping me achieve my career goals, but I won’t know until I go through with it.

The second bit of news, which is actually the first bit that I mentioned above, is that I interviewed for and was offered a job at another school district. If I’ve talked to you about it, then you already know as much as I do. As the details are finalized, I’ll try to remember to follow up this post with more. For now, I’ll leave you with that much information.

Nokia N95 8GB trial

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by WOM World via Flickr. Colin, the person who contacted me, explained that WOM World was a Nokia-sponsored site that tracks Nokia buzz on the web, and that they also run a trial program where they send out Nokia devices for testing and review. He offered me a 3-week trial of a Nokia N95 8GB. He wrote:

The N95 8GB North American version is one of the latest releases and we’re seeing social media users like you would be interested in having the device for three weeks to put it through its paces.

It has the same spec as the regular N95 8GB, so; 5MP Carl Zeiss lens camera with auto-focus, full GPS, MP3 player with integrated player keys, dual sliding action, WIFI, etc. But this version comes with updated software and full US 3G network support. In addition to being on Symbian, which means it’s open to literally thousands of applications, everything from Google maps to Twitter.
