Speed Racer trailer

Moviefone has the first trailer of the Wachowski brothers’ Speed Racer. Speed Racer is one of my favorite cartoons, so you can imagine how excited I am to see the movie this May. You can see the trailer in three HD formats (480, 720 and 1080), or just click play below:

Bono is the walrus

After dinner at Greek Village Taverna last night, Chris and I went to see Across the Universe with Tim and Sam. We had been anticipating the movie’s release since we saw the first teaser trailers; the in-laws are big fans for The Beatles. For those of you who don’t know, AtU is a new movie musical featuring The Beatles’ music. Despite what seems like a great premise, I did not come out of the theater with entirely positive thoughts about the movie.

Summer blockbusters

The latest xkcd comic is spot on about summer blockbusters. I heart Summer.

What’s been going on?

A lot has happened since my last post. Among them are:

  • I saw Transformers. I found it quite entertaining, despite the ridiculous computer stuff. The movie accomplishes what it was meant to accomplish, and the CG was terrific.
  • I saw The Bourne Ultimatum. While I liked the story, I hated the directing. I almost lost my lunch because of the shaky camera movement.
  • The green couches have left our living room, and the garbage man took them.
  • Most of the crown molding has found its way to where the walls meet the ceilings in our living room and dining room. There are only two pieces left to install.
  • The hallway’s baseboards are finished. There is no purple dog hanging over the stairs.
  • The garage is mostly empty after three major weeks of cleaning it. My mom is even helping to sift through the stuff.
  • I have started to slowly rebuild my iTunes library after losing it. Of the 10971 items on the iPod, 190 items have been added to my new library.
  • My doctor suggested I should have a daily intake of 1,500 calories, split up 40/40/20 as proteins/carbohydrates/fat, however you figure that out. I’ll find out about my cholesterol in a few days.
  • I may have found an adequate replacement for Stacey, my hair lady in Palatine. Her name is Amy, and she’s here in Schaumburg. She cuts my hair to my liking, and quickly. Plus, she gives a great shampoo.
  • I’m taking a day off on Wednesday to act like a tourist downtown with Chris and the Pizzicas. We’re going to take an architectural tour on the river and lake. I’m hoping to have some good photos.

I’m sure there’s more, but I guess I’d better head off to bed. We’re hitting up Richard Walker’s at 9 in the morning. So much for me sleeping in on my day off.

Rambo

Here’s yet another post with video from YouTube. It is the first trailer for John Rambo, the fourth in the Rambo series. I don’t remember anything from the previous Rambo series except that Stallone played a bad ass military-type character named Rambo. I’m going to have to put the trilogy on my Netflix.com queue to get myself up to speed before this one comes out in May, when it goes up against the fourth installment of Indiana Jones.

Before watching the trailer, please note that it is a bit graphic in violence, and that it probably would not receive a G rating from the MPAA:

Driving to the mall

In Florida, a teenager drove a Mitsubishi Lancer through a shopping mall entrance, and then just missed the escalater as he dropped the car off of the second floor twenty-five feet onto the first floor. And it was all caught on video by the security cameras:

That makes me think of how difficult it would be to drive through Woodfield.

Turtle power

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesTMNT was released in theaters Friday, and I have to say that this is the best Turtles movie so far. Yes, the script was oozing (pun intended) with cheese and it was a cartoon with a PG rating, but it was very entertaining. Also, the animation and the voice acting was very well done, including the delivery of classic lines like, "I love being a turtle!" I also think that it properly displayed what I always felt was Eastman and Laird’s original vision of the Turtles, and it should, with Peter Laird as one of the executive producers.

My first exposure to the Turtles was through the original cartoon series. The cartoon always felt, well, cartoony. That was great for a Saturday morning cartoon in the late ’80s and early ’90s. However, it wasn’t until later that I discovered the Turtles true origins: a comic book parody of New Mutants and Daredevil. The original artwork was much darker than the first animated series, and it wasn’t until first live action movie, and then again the 2003 animated series, that the darker Turtles received mainstream exposure.

Fast forward a few years to 2007, and you finally get to see the Turtles as I imagine Eastman and Laird would have originally wanted them. The animation resembles the manga style, with flowing character movements, closeups during battle scenes and even the momentary mid-air pause during leaps from building to building. So, yeah, while it is not going to win any awards (although I think the great fight scene on the rooftop should be nominated for one), it was a very entertaining movie. Of course, I might be biased having grown up with the Turtles.

Now here’s to hoping that Transformers won’t suck.
