Taking the leap

Thank you, Mr. Bush, for the stimulus check. I am doing my part to help stimulate the economy. I have finally taken the leap and just ordered an Xbox 360 Elite from Amazon.com. I also ordered Rock Band Special Edition so that family and friends could rock out at Pete’s graduation party on Saturday. I may need to borrow a second guitar *cough* Michael *cough* if I don’t decide to just go buy one Friday afternoon.

To round out my major purchase, I also bought a second wireless controller and an S-Video cable (which will keep me content until next year’s HDTV purchase - Chris, you have been warned). I haven’t dropped the cash on GTA4 just yet, as I am still playing Guitar Hero III and Mario Kart Wii.

Since I won’t be going into work until the afternoon tomorrow, I think I’ll look at the wiring situation by the TV. I know I’ve got to clean things up a bit before everything arrives. I didn’t get the wireless adapter for the Xbox 360, but I already have a network cable just sitting by the TV for either the laptop or PS2. That should work just fine for the time being.

Well, it’s off to bed for me now, assuming I can contain myself enough to sleep.

Mario Kart Wii

When I got home today, not only did I find a fresh set of Yokohama tires for Chris’s car, but I also found a box from Amazon. That could only mean that I now have Mario Kart Wii! I have only been playing it for about 90 minutes, but it is loads of fun.

Nintendo: You’re killing me!

As some of you may know, when I went on vacation in Seattle, I played a lot of Rock Band on Hersch’s XBox 360. Just yesterday it was officially announced that Rock Band will be coming to the Wii on June 22. Unfortunately, it will lack a lot of the cool features of the next-gen versions, such as online play, downloadable content and customizable characters. The only plus is that there are five tracks exclusive to the Wii. Personally, I would rather have any one of the other missing features than exclusive songs.

It looks like Electronic Arts is blaming the missing features on Nintendo. A Rock Band spokesperson was quoted as saying, "When developing ‘Rock Band’ for the Wii platform, we focused on making the core gameplay experience as solid and enjoyable as possible…Wii’s online capabilities and potential have yet to be fully realized." You know, it’s great that the core gameplay experience will be solid, but I’d like to be able to play online and download new songs. You would think that MTV and Harmonix would like to stick it to Activision and Red Octane by making Rock Band for Wii an out-of-the-box kick-ass experience. Instead, they make it a Guitar-Hero-III-with-drums-and-mic-ho-hum experience. Boo.

You’re my Guitar Hero

Chris and I went to Target today to buy some stuff that we needed (or wanted, however you want to look at it). After getting the stuff we came for, we took a stroll around the store. When we got to the video game section, I went to check out the Wii games. That’s when I saw it: Guitar Hero III for the Wii was available!

I quickly grabbed the game, and we headed for the registers. I’m unboxing the game now, and we’re going to be playing for a while.

Zero Punctuation reviews

I just discovered Zero Punctuation thanks to Diggnation. In the last DIggnation video podcast, they showed a large portion of the Zero Punctuation review of Guitar Hero III. Having just played plenty of Guitar Hero over the weekend, I found the review to be pretty damned funny. Check it out after the jump.

Kid’s got game

I saw this video linked from Digg. A 9 year old beats the hardest song on Guitar Hero 3 on XBox 360:

Classic gaming lives on

The other day, Chris wanted to play some video games. We played a little bit of Super Mario Bros. on the Wii, and then I struggled to connect to the Wii Shopping Channel to get other games. Later that night, I finally did get on the Shopping Channel, and I downloaded SimCity, Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, Metroid and Excitebike. The Wii Virtual Console is great for reliving memories of 8-bit games past. The retro love doesn’t stop there. Cal State’s marching band performed a halftime show celebrating classic video games. You can watch a video of the performance at Gizmodo.
