How I spent the Christmas holiday

It occurs to me that I can’t write on my blog as easily as I once did. I still maintain that it is the lack of a desk that causes this, but I think it has more to do with the fact that I can be pretty damn lazy. Especially now that I’ve become sucked into the West Wing.

Christmas didn’t really feel like Christmas this year, mostly ‘cuz I didn’t spend it with my family and ‘cuz in Japan, it’s just not as big of a holiday as it is to us back home. It probably didn’t help that I had to work both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On the bright side, the higher-ups slid everyone’s schedule to finish by 5:40 or 6:30 PM instead of 11:00 like it’s been for all of December, so go team.

Four days before Mike and Anna’s Christmas party, they had us over for dinner. And by us, I mean me and Steve only. Anna had sent us a message about it like a week before and asked us to dress “semi-formal” — a fact which seemed to slip both of our minds. It wasn’t until I was on the bus half way to their apato that I remembered this little fact. Needless to say, I felt like a huge jack ass for showing up in jeans and hoodie. I felt only mildly better when Steve gesture to his own jeans and T-shirt…but still. My brother was wearing a tie for crying out loud.

Anyway, Mike and Anna wanted to have us over for “Christmas” dinner ‘cuz, well, we’ve been pretty good friends for a little over a year now and they wanted to do something special to celebrate the holiday. Anna, being the amazing wonder cook that she is, made ham steaks with a honey glaze to make up for the fact that we can’t get a good ham in this country, pork ribs, mashed potatoes, sauted (with the special accent mark on the “e”) vegetables, and managed to find British Christmas pudding for dessert. We listened to Christmas music and sat down at the table like…grown-ups for lack of a better term. It was…really amazing. They also gave us our Christmas presents at that time. It kills me how generous Mike and Anna can be. I mean, neither one of them were working during December and they still manage to do something like this.

Just kills me.

Christmas Eve day I had to work, but it was only for five lessons so I really didn’t notice much. I copped out on the White Elephant gift and just bought a Starbucks gift card ‘cuz I’m lame and couldn’t think of anything else. (They did it proper, not like the way we used to at Al’s parties with the whole gag gift factor.)

Again, Mike and Anna had a lovely spread for dinner. Anna didn’t cook the chicken, she and Mike bought them from Costco — and those of us who remembered last Thanksgiving reminded Mike several times throughout the night not to overdose on the chicken again — and spent the evening as friends do — eating, laughing, and enjoying each others’ company. The White Elephant was good fun and we all seemed to end up with nice but affordable gifts.

Christmas Day really didn’t feel like it if anything ‘cuz again, I had to work. I made it a point to go to Starbucks again to get a Chocolate Mint Mocha since I had the feeling they would be gone by the next day (I was right). I spent the day trying to write and fix a lesson plan that I’d been working on since Sunday, but again, things at work have been less than exciting…but I don’t really want to get into that right this second, so I’m just gonna skip over that part and get right to how I spent the evening.

I’d made plans with Katrina to just hang out for the evening. Since Japan has this tradition about Christmas cake, I went to Morozoff (the place where I used to buy cheesecakes a lot) and bought a chocolate roll cake. I was a little surprised to find that they still had some since it was well after 6 PM and a lot of other places have you special order Christmas cakes, but I considered myself lucky and bought the damn thing. It even came with this Christmas decoration thing and candles. Not sure why it came with candles, but it did. I think I freaked out the poor clerk when after I wished her a Merry Christmas, though. The look on her face was most amusing. It seemed like the appropriate thing to do at the time. Anyway, I had me a cake and made my way down to the platform.

While I was standing there, out of the corner of my eye I see this box appear beside me. It was kind of intrusive so I was forced to look up. Rob stood there holding a pizza box from Slices. His Christmas present to me. I had to laugh because I’d been thinking about ordering a pizza all day and thought that they probably wouldn’t be open. It probably helps to have someone like Rob ‘cuz he’s pretty tight with the Slices people. So much so that they let him go behind the counter and the like. Anyway, it was pretty cool of him.

Katrina and I ended up watching Firefly. I hate to say it, but I’m not much of a fan of “Bushwhacked” — don’t get me wrong, it has its great moments like “Have you ever been with a warrior woman?” and the like…but the episode just seems to drag to me. Even though it’s the same length as all the others, it feels longer than the pilot. We got as far as “Shindig” before we called it a night.

I also made sure to call my mom. You know how sometimes you can just tell the person on the other end is grinning and is just so happy to hear from you? Yeah. It was one of those phone calls. I’d caught my brother and my “cousin” (family friend, you know how it is) on instant messenger on my Christmas Day morning, your Christmas Eve, and asked them both to wish everyone in my family a Merry Christmas. She said she was pleased to have gotten that message and some such. My dad was apparently happy to get the golf clubs from me and my brother…and gosh, I was happy to given them to him. Kinda wish I had known about it, but you know how it is. My family is just like that. It’s not like we don’t try, it’s more that my parents are very particular about their things. She told me she put my Christmas card up by the tree and they took pictures, and you’re damn right I made them put up a tree. (A phone call to my parents a two weeks before revealed the fact that they weren’t going to put one up ‘cuz I wasn’t home. I was plenty outraged about that — not really really, but I told my mom they had to put one up whether I was there or not and take pictures.)

It was a nice conversation and not for the first time this month did I wish I was home. Hell, I made it a point to not open Christmas cards and presents until Christmas and didn’t even realize I could open them until Anna and VoW were like “Did you like what we got you/your Christmas card?” (respectively).

So that was my Christmas holiday. Not bad for my first one away from home, but I really hope that I’ll be home for the next Christmas.

Ordonii annual Christmas party

I didn’t know what else to call this post, but anyway — I was looking back at last year’s posts for this time of year and painfully remembered that I’d be missing out on sex brownies. Dammit!!

And oh yeah, carousing with my friends. I’m upset about that too.

But the sex brownies was what triggered things. Mmm….

So sexy…

Happy Christmas!!

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Christmas just in case I don’t get a chance to post later. So, yeah — HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!! And of course, Happy Birthday to Chris O!!!

Cheers to one and all and I miss you!!!

Hail to the chief…

I freaking love Martin Sheen and Stockard Channing.

I’m also amused by the faces I recognize from Star’s Hollow. Rob told me that when Gilmore Girls first aired some people wondered if Aaron Sorkin was ghost writing that show. I can kind of see why. I’m sure these Star’s Hollow faces are just coincidences, but it’s still amusing to me.

And the Mayor. How cool is that?

Totally whipping through these, though. Rob said I had to ration them. That amused me ‘cuz I used to say the same thing to Jacob and Darya. Personally, I blame this December work schedule. I work all lates so it ain’t like I’m blowing off friends or anything.

Rahr. So love Martin Sheen and Stockard Channing. I mean, I think the whole cast is great, but whenever President Bartlet and the First Lady are in a scene together, I just gush. They’re so cool.

Okay. I’ll stop now. And go back to The West Wing.

Count your blessings

So I had six lessons on my schedule today — that’s more than half! Things are almost back to normal…

Until we heard about the Option B e-mails. Apparently, a few people received messages saying they won’t be needed January 10th. Those of us on Option A found this news incredibly disconcerting while at the same time a kind of “count your blessings” moment. I can’t say I’m overly happy about what’s happening, but that goes back to the whole cynical and mistrusting thing that we’ve been experiencing lately.

It doesn’t look favorably at this G.Nova. And I’m worried about Mike, Anna, and Steve. I guess we’ll find out what happens in a few weeks.

Way behind the times…

…but holy fuckin’ bloody hell this show is genius.

Sorry, just got into The West Wing.

A bit rusty

I taught three lessons tonight over the system and I gotta admit, it was a bit odd. I know it shouldn’t be that hard to slip back into things, but I was like five minutes into my first lesson and was like, “Oh yeah! I’m supposed to be writing comments and taking quotes!” I really feel that my comments tonight were lacking their usual content, but I think I can be cut some slack.

The three teaching periods went by pretty quickly. I wish I could say the same thing about the development periods.

I’m supposed to have my first bit of Kids Training tomorrow. I hope I don’t suck.

This time last year…

…I’d be home.

Sad.

Well, I miss y’all and I’m thinking about you and wishin’ I was carousing with you ‘n’ stuff. Someone drink a Peppermint Mocha for me since Japan sucks and doesn’t have that holiday flavor here.

“You went all the way back up for a cola?”

The best thing happened to me on Wednesday before work — I got a free Pepsi!!

I was way stoked about it. I went to one of the few known vending machines that has regular Pepsi. After I made my selection, the machine did this kind of slot machine thing where a bunch of numbers scroll down. My numbers came up as 0000. Then it started flashing things and made some kind of announcement. I was a bit puzzled. At first, I thought it would give me my money back, so I pushed the “money return” thing. Nothing happened. Then I noticed that all the beverages were lit up again so I took a stab in the dark and selected Pepsi.

WOO!!! FREE PEPSI!!!

I was quite happy on my way to work.

I put the Pepsi in the fridge for safe keeping.

After work, when I was in the elevator almost to the bottom floor, I realized I’d forgotten it. “Drat,” I said aloud.

One of the other chaps in the lift asked me what was wrong. “I forgot something.”

It was then that his girlfriend also realized she forgot something. So when we got to the bottom floor, we all three rode the elevator back up. We happened to catch the same elevator again going down, and the fellow noticed what I was holding. “You went all the way back up for a cola?”

“Not just any cola, a free cola! And a Pepsi!”

He was mildly amused by the fact that I was so excited about my can of Pepsi, and the fact that I went on to tell him there were two vending machines by my house that sell them for 100 yen.

It’s only taken me about two years, but I am slowly but surely discovering all the Pepsi vending machines in Osaka. So far, I’ve acquired Pepsi from six of them. Sure, doesn’t sound all that amazing to you blokes back home, but if you visited Japan, you’d understand how hard it really is.

It’s not that we’re ungrateful…

It’s more that we’re a bit cynical and wary.

I’ve been back “teaching” for about a week now, and there have already been some interesting days at work. Perhaps the most prominent point of interest is the New Year’s Holiday. In years past, Nova has shut down operations for about ten days for the New Year break (it’s the big holiday here instead of Christmas). From what I understand, these days have always just been considered unpaid — we’re not working and all schools are closed anyway.

This year, with the new company, they are trying to keep things as “normal” as possible for us. I guess this includes the New Year Holiday. Here’s where things get a bit interesting…

Monday we were issued the dates of the holiday: Dec 28th - Jan 6. Three of these days would be New Year’s paid holidays (something that had never been done with the company before), but the others would not. So, depending on your weekend, you would have to make up the rest of the days via self-swap (which is usually restricted to green tags and higher ups), or by advancing your allotted paid holidays despite not working for the company for six months (which is undoubtedly a kindness since they don’t have to be that accommodating, so good on them). Also, the days you choose to swap must coincide with the month. So, for example, (holy smokes I’m using my teaching language in a post) my weekends are Thursday and Friday, Dec 29th falls on a Saturday, so if I want to use that day as a swap and not as a New Year paid holiday, then I have to make up that day in Dec. In my case, I would have to figure out four days I would want to self-swap or use an advanced paid holiday.

I went home that night trying to weigh my options.

Tuesday, when I came to work, the situation was still being talked about. Since it was posted late on Monday night, I don’t think many people really had a chance to look at the announcement carefully. Well, they did now. The general interpretation was that we weren’t being given a choice about the ten days and now we have to give up days in our weekend to make up for them. Yeah, it’s nice that they’re giving us these ten days off, but not when they weren’t really asked for. Giving us New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day would have sufficed. Sure, not ideal, but better than being forced to work extra in other months.

The other fellow working on the development stuff with me was quite vocal about his discontent in the smoking room, using quite colorful language and expletives regarding the people running the company. Little did he know that the new president of the company was in the smoking room at the time. Needless to say, he was a bit embarrassed, but unapologetic about his feelings. (He didn’t find out that the president was in the room until well after the incident.) Most of us teased him about it, and he wasn’t reprimanded or anything for it…but he has the feeling he will soon be fired.

All throughout the day, even though we were supposed to be proof reading, we were often interrupted by our own selves trying to suss out what we should do and argue a bit about whether or not it was fair what was happening. G. communication generally give three paid holidays at New Year, three for Golden Week, and three during Obon to its employees and are just trying to have the same standards for G.Nova (as we’ve been calling it, with hard “g” as in “Gawain”). Fair enough. But they’re also trying to keep things “normal” which didn’t quite work out the way they had hoped.

To add fuel to the fire, the pay day has changed from the 5th of every month back to the 15th of every month. Generally, not too bad…but when you’re trying to recover and make ends meet from the loss of two months’ worth of salaries not being paid to you and you were counting on that money on the 5th, those ten days make a huge difference. I’m not bad off, but I am slightly flustered by this turn of events — prior to this, there was a strong chance I was going to be able to make it to my next pay check without touching my savings…now, I’m not as confident.

People’s discontent was not nearly as bad as two months ago, but there was definitely some disgruntlement. Personally, I was irked, but I don’t generally kick up a huge fuss. I mean, look at what happened as the ship sank — I still went to work when everyone else I knew had given up on the sitch.

By the end of Tuesday, though, the situation changed a bit. Another announcement was put up saying that instead of three days, we would be given six. That made a significant difference in people’s situations. Heck, some people ended up not even needing to arrange a swap! (I only need one.)

As of Wednesday, another notice was put up asking instructor’s to not submit any requests until all dates and terms have been finalized — there was even rumor going around that they’d end up giving us seven paid days, which would mean everyone would be set.

Honestly, I think they’re better off just using the ten days as unpaid days. Then they don’t have to worry so much about giving us extra money like this.

So yeah, it may sound like we’re a bit ungrateful. We should just be happy to have our jobs back, etc. But, as some of my co-workers pointed out, if we let this kind of thing slide, who’s to say they won’t do something else worse than this? I think we’re all a bit more cynical and wary when it comes to this job…can you really blame us?
