The night I learned about key lime pie

These posts are kind of out of order…

But more importantly it was the night I hung out with old friends.

So last week Wednesday, I got a call from Chris O inviting me over to the Halfway House. Mark got a new job! He was celebrating by getting drunk! He was more or less drunk by the time I got there, since I had to stop at Dreamland and pick up my comics. (I refrain from posting about the latest Buffy for fear of spoiler.)

It turned out I was the only one to be able to come over, but that was ok ‘cuz Mark drunk is pretty entertaining. It was also decided that we would try the celebration thing again on the morrow (Thursday).

Before heading over to the Halfway House, I decided to cushion the time by going to the library. I had the feeling that if I headed over right when I wanted to, I’d be the first and only one there. Not that that’s a problem, I just feel bad about it is all. I finally got my hands on The Looking Glass Wars as well as “The Sworn Sword: A Tale of the Seven Kingdoms”; I even checked out a book The Knight in Medieval England 1000 - 1400 in effort to help me with my going-nowhere fic. I went out to Library Lake to read a little before caving and heading to the Halfway House.

Mark was out getting dinner when I arrived. That was all five-by-five, though ‘cuz I had books to read and Dixie to play with. I was playing with her in the yard when Mark came home. I was a bit surprised to see him ‘cuz I didn’t even notice him going into the sun room.

I had sent a text to me Da earlier that evening telling him that when he comes he should either bring booze or pie. When I mentioned this to Mark, he voted for pie. We passed the time playing Rock Band with Herschell, but then went upstairs to wait for me Da to get there.

When he arrived, he came bearing two pies: the requested French Silk and Key Lime pie. I’m pretty sure we all gave him a look that said, “Key Lime? Seriously?” But Chris and I tried it anyway (I’m not sure if it was the first time Mark had had it before).

Dude. Key lime pie is awesome! It’s been like five days and I’m still thinking about how I want more. Sadly, the closest Baker’s Square is on Barrington. I dunno if it’s really that much farther than the one that was on Higgins, but it sure seems like it!

Grant told us about his business trips, which is just plain funny. Basically, he’s not really doing what he got hired to do. This only supports my theory that me Da doesn’t really work for a mild-mannered company based in the Sears Tower, but is really working to become an agent for some black-ops group borderline akin to SD-6. (And no, I did not just blow his cover.)

While we were sitting around eating pie, Grant got a call from Kris. He was in Schaumburg and he came over to the Halfway House after finishing up some stuff with Street Theatre. Al was not long after him, although her appearance was a bit unexpected but welcome all the same.

It was seriously just like old times. Strong memories of the summer of Chris and Mark’s wedding came up and I couldn’t help but smile.

That was the summer that started it all.

It was a damn good night.

And I learned about how good Key lime pie is.
