When I was at uni, one of my mates told me to check this out. You know, these were the days before the glory of You Tube, so it’s all in straight up Japanese. You can find translated versions on said youtube, but personally, I like this one better because the cat hangs itself instead of facing the wall; the hanging cat is the one I saw first (obviously), so that’s the one I think of as being the original.
It’s no secret that I’m still in a bit of Japan withdrawal, so I couldn’t help but think of this.
Since I watched it again, I just realized the joke within the English lyrics. Show me, show you seems all kinds of nonsensical at first glance. But then I remembered the word for soy sauce in Japanese “shoyu”. “Show me! Soy sauce!”
Too bad I didn’t remember this vid when Yoss and VoW came to visit me. We probably could have avoided the sauce fiasco at Royal Host. I think they ended up bringing out the glaze they use for the hamburger steak set.
So, next time folk go to Japan and want soy sauce for their rice, just remember this vid! Show me! Show you (shoyu)!
