Batman versus anybody?
The answer is always Batman.
I even back Batman over Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and we all know how much of a fangirl I am when it comes to all things Joss Whedon.
I got to see The Dark Knight at it’s highly publicized midnight premiere. I had doubts about getting tickets based on the news, but I was pretty damn happy when our gang secured some Thursday afternoon.
When I got to AMC 30, though, I was starting to regret that decision. Mostly due to the fact that I hate people, and the movie theater was overflowing with people.
I have never attended a midnight show quite like this one.
Our group had the good fortune of being in a smaller theater; we were also lucky enough to be part of the first wave to enter so we were able to find decent seats all together. Unfortunately for us, we had no idea the girls behind us would be so obnoxious.
It’s funny. I’m still trying to put my reaction to the movie to words. When it comes to certain movies, I usually have to think about it. I know it sounds bizarre, but sometimes movies do this weird-ass thing to me where they’re not what you expect.
The Dark Knight wasn’t quite what I was expecting.
As a straight up Batman fan, of course I liked it. (I refer you to the title of this post.) That’s saying a lot because I hated the X-Men movies, and I started out my comic career on X-Men. But to be perfectly honest, I think I liked Iron Man more. Yoss Mike and I were both saying that it’s a better comic book movie. (I think the exact words used was “superhero”, but technically, Iron Man doesn’t have any powers either.)
I think that’s what my problem was; I was expecting a from-the-pages-of-the-comic kind of movie and instead I got…I wanna say, “something much better”.
Dark Knight wasn’t fun. I thought it was appropriately…well, dark. I felt like it captured the spirit of Gotham City and its caped crusader very well.
And of course, what’s a post about the new Batman movie without mention of Heath Ledger’s Joker? Much like everyone else I know, I couldn’t help but wonder if all the hype around Ledger was because he died recently or because he was actually that good. Personally, I think he really was just that good. His interpretation of Batman’s most famous rogue was amazing; I like that he had a Glasgow smile.
I really feel like I have to see the movie again to get a better feel for it, especially now that I know what to expect.
The fact remains true: Batman versus anybody?
The answer is ALWAYS Batman.
Truth be told I went to the movie worried that Heath Ledger was going to ruin it somehow, but I was pleasantly surprised. Personally I don’t think Heath Ledger is that good an actor and the hype of how he was an actor of legendary proportions after he died was funny. Mostly because these are the same people who thought he wasn’t worth scraps when he was alive.
