UK Loses a Tough Bird
Gwyneth Dunwoody, a long-time Labour MP died. Ms. Dunwoody was always a strong advocate for her constituents and fiercely independent. She was a rare strong Eurosceptic voice in a heavily pro-European Union party. Her unshakable commitment to her principles earned her the strong respect of her colleagues. In fact, the government, which has significant control over how parliament does its business, attempted to take the chairmanship of the Transport Committee from her in 2001. Her fellow backbenchers revolted, allowing her to keep the chair. The House of Commons will be poorer when it reconvenes Monday without the Member for Crewe and Nantwich.
