She went in and had a bios-, bebop-, bebopsy

by Mark on May.15, 2008, under general

I kid you not! A 9-year-old girl went to the hospital in Greece with stomach pains. Doctors found a growth next to her stomach. Inside the 6-centimeter growth, doctors found a head, hair and eyes, but no brain. The growth contained the girl’s embryonic twin!

ID-iots

by Mark on Apr.19, 2008, under general

I’m not going to pussyfoot here: intelligent design is anything but intelligent. I have a clear bias on this one. Here are some videos that show what’s wrong with those that believe in intelligent design (not all creationists believe in intelligent design):

There are 19 videos in all. The series was created by YouTube user Thunderf00t. I’m in the middle of the third video right now, and so far I find the videos quite entertaining. I know most of the science in the videos, so there isn’t much educating happening for me.

Tell me what you think of the videos in the comments.

Election results and celestial bodies

by Mark on Feb.27, 2008, under general

In a stunning revelation that is sure to upset the governing overlords, today Diebold leaked the 2008 Presidential election results, more than eight months ahead of schedule. For many years, the winner of the Presidential election was not publicly announced before noon on Election Day, at which point the governing overlords assumed that there were enough votes cast to safely "call" a winner without arousing suspicions. Not so this year. Any voter can walk into the booth on November 4 confident that his vote does not, in fact, count for anything:

Seeing this news story reminds me of when I discovered professional wrestling was just a couple of stage actors groping each other in their underwear.

Lunar eclipse – so many photos

by Mark on Feb.21, 2008, under Uncategorized

DSC03023 Last night I uploaded all of my photos, good and bad, of the total lunar eclipse, the last for North America until 2010. I literally dug out the telescope and Grant and Al came over after Al’s haircut and getting dinner to view the eclipse with me. The telescope was a little difficult to use at first, as the cold weather made it harder to focus. Grant figured it out and found the moon, and he kept track of its movements in the night sky.

Two have two…

by Mark on Jan.06, 2008, under Uncategorized

The title for this photo from Flickr is "Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun." Then I read the text that accompanies the photo of two cherry pies, and I can only say WTF? Click on the picture to see what I mean. I have to caution you, though, that the material in print may not be suitable for minors.

Spider mech

I haven’t seen this verified as real, but it’s a cool video nonetheless. Some "southern gentlemen" created a gas-powered 8-legged spider mech:

Fun (and learning) with fire

by Mark on Nov.28, 2007, under Uncategorized

Throughout all my years of studying science, and more specifically physics, I have seen some pretty cool science demos. In Mr. Kennedy’s class, I saw Group I elements ignite when exposed to water. In Mr. Keenan’s class, I saw a cinder block broken over someone laying down on a bed of nails. In Dr. Spalding’s class, I viewed really tiny objects using an AFM and an SEM. In all those years, however, I had never come across the Rubens Tube, until today. Here are a couple of YouTube videos to demonstrate the tube:

And to show it in action with a flute:

I think a Rubens’ tube is going on a list of projects that I want to do when I find free time :-)
