On Saturday, we were planning on hitting up a few of the local car dealers to get some information about some of the cars I have been looking at over the past couple of weeks. I had planned on visiting Toyota, Honda and Subaru, then finishing the day at CarMax. Since we planned on visiting CarMax, Chris’s dad suggested that we stop there first. It ended up being the only dealer we needed to visit that day.

I have enabled OpenID support for the blog thanks to VerseLogic’s OpenID plugin. With OpenID you can authenticate to supporting sites using a URL you control. As long as you are authenticated to your OpenID provider, you can quickly authenticate with any other OpenID site. The first time you log into a site with OpenID, you can quickly create a profile by sharing information with your OpenID provider and the new website.
I did not opt to manage my own OpenID yet, but if I like phpMyID after taking a good look at it, I might just manage my OpenID with it. I am going to see about implementing OpenID on blogho.us, but that looks like it will require some extra effort. Perhaps it will be worth it, though, if I migrate over the other blogs hosted here. I have been wanting to do that for some time, since ask-mark.com was never really meant to be anything more than a place for me to vent. I think it would serve the other blogs better to be on their own domain. Maybe blogho.us isn’t it, though. I’ll have to figure that out later.
Right now, I’ve got to get ready for Cristina’s birthday party.
It’s Friday night, and I’m living the dream. OK, that’s not exactly true. I’m not out with friends, flying to a spectacular vacation destination, or even out at a movie. Nope, none of that. I’m sitting at home, just Dixie and me. I just ordered the Lou Malnati’s pizzas that Chris wants for the musical directors gathering she’s having after tonight’s show. Other than that, so far I have been doing a lot of catching up on my RSS feeds in Google Reader and watching YouTube videos (I just re-discoveredand communitychannel), and I may turn on the latest episode of Lost (no, I didn’t watch that last night, either).
A few months ago I was going stir crazy having spent most evening with the TV and/or computer, but tonight it just feels right not going out or doing anything. Perhaps that’s just a sign of how tired I have been. I’m finding this time without extra distractions to be quite relaxing. Perhaps I’ll just play some music instead of watching Lost now that I’m done with YouTube for now.
It’s that time of year again: buying lots of stuff, eating lots of holiday goodies, and dealing with lots of stupid people.
There once was a time that I looked forward to Christmas shopping. The pleasure I got out of weaving in and out of holiday traffic (both on the road and in the mall) has long since been replaced by the feeling of dread about the holiday traffic. I was reminded of this the other day as we ventured into Woodfield. The floors were crowded with kiosks where kids were hocking the wares of shady vendors. People stopped in the middle of the walkways to talk on their cellphones, despite the foot traffic obviously inconvenienced by their social exercise. I did find it humorous that Woodfield has replaced their normally ginormous lighted tree with a much smaller one and an inflated snow globe advertising Fred Clause. Last year, the mall had a little problem when some decorations caught fire near the tree.
On Penny Arcade today was this comic about Gabe’s stolen deer. This is more of what I was expecting to see happen to the six teenagers who were caught after vandalizing a Hoffman Estates man’s Christmas decorations. They didn’t just steal his lights, they caused about $1,000 in damages and dragged the man from their car. Instead of death by holiday spirit, the man chose to not press charges against the teens.
I am a huge fan of computers with multiple monitors, whether it is a desktop with multiple monitors or a laptop with external monitors connected to it. I am sitting here at one of our alternative high schools updating several computers because their anti-virus software is not talking to our management server. Since I am not in my office, I don’t have my laptop docked. However, I was able to connect my laptop to one of the 19-inch monitors currently hooked up to tablets in two of the offices here.
My laptop’s display has Firefox, Lotus Notes and Thunderbird open. On that external monitor, I have an RDP session open with the management server, which in turn has RDP sessions open with each of the client workstations that needs to be updated. I have four workstations open and running the updates right now. This saves me from having to walk from room to room and updating the workstations individually. Unfortunately, the MAN connection between the Administration Center and this alternative school isn’t fast enough to make it practical to go home and finish the job via VPN. You can’t win them all, I guess.
After dinner at Greek Village Taverna last night, Chris and I went to see Across the Universe with Tim and Sam. We had been anticipating the movie’s release since we saw the first teaser trailers; the in-laws are big fans for The Beatles. For those of you who don’t know, AtU is a new movie musical featuring The Beatles’ music. Despite what seems like a great premise, I did not come out of the theater with entirely positive thoughts about the movie.
Continue reading ‘Bono is the walrus’I took some time off on Friday to clean the house more after three long weeks of work getting things prepped for the new year. The first thing I attacked was finding all of the stuff that used to reside in our old China cabinet. I was able to find all of the boxes of carefully wrapped glass, and I brought that down to the dining room. Chris and I put all of that stuff away Saturday during our second surge of cleaning.
